CHASING THE SONG

Edie (40s to 50s) – Owner of a stuggling music publishing company. She is a force of nature.

Ginny Santini (20s) – Young and enthusiastic and very, very talented.

Jesse (mid-to-late 20’s) – Small guy, big ego. Great songwriter.

Fatman Freddie (mid-to-late 20’s) – Jesse’s writing partner.

Stan (47) – A songwriter from the earlier heyday of Tin Pan Alley.

Cheryl (20’s ) – African-American. A secretary and Fatman Freddie’s girlfriend.

Oliver (50’s to 60’s) – A gray flannel suit of a man.

Doreen and Satin (20’s) – Along with Cheryl, they work as secretaries and back-up demo singers at Edie’s company

Songwriters (20’s) - A collection of four social misfits and unhip hipsters. They are all from Brooklyn or Jersey. And great musicians. 3 of the 4 must play piano very well.

Frances Eden (20’s) – A very pretty (probably blonde) teenage idol.

Frankie Fontana (Early 20's) – An Italian-American teen idol from Philadelphia.

Betty (40’s) – Frankie Fontana’s mom and manager

THE ORPHAN OF ZHAO

Tu’an Gu (35 to 50) - Asian actor; a powerful courtier in the Emperor’s court. He is the manipulative head of the Palace Guard who abuses his office to be the power behind the throne. He should be physically imposing.

Wei Jiang (35 to 50) - Asian actor; a counselor and general. He was exiled from the capital for many years. He is a good and wise man who has remained loyal. He returns so he can save the kingdom from Tu’an Gu. Singing desirable. Actor will also play other roles.

Zhao Dun (late 20’s to early 30’s) - Asian actor; a minister and head of the Zhao clan. He is married to the Emperor’s daughter. He is accused of treason and brought down by Tu’an Gu. Actor will also play other roles. Singing desirable.

Cheng Bo (also known as The Orphan of Zhao) (20’s) - boyish Asian actor; he is the sole survivor of his clan; he was switched with another baby shortly after his birth. In his new identity, he was adopted by Tu’an Gu and raised as his son. Charismatic and open-hearted. Singing desirable.

Emperor/Ballad Singer (35 to 50) - Asian actor; the emperor is a weak leader made weaker by his favorite courtier, Tu’an Gu. The Ballad Singer must have a strong voice.

Chu Ni (25 to 45) - Asian actor; an assassin sent to kill Zhao Dun. Actor will also play other comic roles.

Ti Miming – servant of Zhao Dun. Actor will also play other roles.

Princess’ Maid – Asian Actress who will also play other roles.

Matt Ross (16) - a high school junior

Luke Overbey (20s) - An evangelical youth minister.
