BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

All characters are very good singers who move well.

Orville Wright & Wilbur Wright: 20’s - early 30’s. Excellent singers. These characters display drive and determination without allowing each other to give up on their dreams. Energetic and focused, there is chemistry between these two characters. We instantly understand the sibling connection and occasional rivalry.

Katherine Wright: 20’s. The Wright brother’s sister Katherine was a young woman with a career as a high school teacher. Independent and bright, Katherine was an integral part of the Wright brothers’ achievements contributing many ideas and most of her career earnings to their endeavors. She is the family peacekeeper and the voice of reason.

Milton Wright: Mid 40’s–50’s. The Wright brother’s father. A minister, Milton Wright was a very stern, strict and serious man. He also suffered greatly after the death of his wife and was quite melancholy. He loves his children yet has a difficult time expressing his feelings.

Samuel Langley: 30’s–40’s - Langley was a scientist, a bureaucrat and a politician. In this play Langley’s Achilles’ heel is his ego.

Octave Chanute: 30’s–40’s - The villain in the play was a very complex man in reality – a scientist, a showman, and a sly and cunning opportunist.

Barker/Harim Maxim/Conductor/Ensemble: 20’s– early 40’s. Though the ensemble characters were all serious inventors and engineers, they are depicted in this play with humor. Singers with a comedy sense and, perhaps, an ear for foreign accents/languages. Those at Kitty Hawk work as an ensemble. Think of them as a Greek chorus, voicing the doubts, the curiosity and ultimately, the excitement of every day people experiencing all the new innovations of the Industrial Revolution.

Otto Lilienthal/J.M. Kaufman/John Daniels/Ensemble: 20’s – early 40’s - Though the ensemble characters were all serious inventors and engineers, they are depicted in this play with humor.

Clement Ader/William Tate/Ensemble: 20’s – early 40’s - Though the ensemble characters were all serious inventors and engineers, they are depicted in this play with humor.
