BREAKDOWN

Synopsis:
1948. Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty visits a prison in Southern Italy where the infamous Nazi, Herbert Kappler, is serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity. As head of the Gestapo in occupied Rome in 1944, acting under direct orders of Adolf Hitler, Kappler was responsible for the Ardeatine massacre of World War Two, killing 335 Italian citizens at the Ardeatine Caves. Monsignor O’Flaherty spent the war years working at the Vatican, famously sheltering thousands of Allied servicemen and Jews from Kappler and the German occupiers. Often dubbed “The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican” Kappler placed a bounty on his head, but O’Flaherty successfully evaded capture. When these two men meet, the war is lived out again as profound questions of responsibility and redemption rattle the cages. This play confronts the evil forces behind the ruthless acts of wartime Rome and questions the role and morality of those who followed orders.

Roles:
Herbert Kappler, 41, a one-time powerful lieutenant colonel in the SS, he now faces a lifetime behind bars. He is a complicated man --unforgiving yet seeks forgiveness from a man he tried to kill. He is bitter and bombastic yet is drawn to finding salvation where none is readily reachable. Requires a German accent.

Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty 50, Irish, a reluctant war hero. Born in Ireland in Co Kerry, he lives and works in Rome. Humble, compassionate, curious with a keen intelligence and wit. He is literate and charming and very insightful to the human condition. Requires an authentic Irish Accent.
