There are three sides to every story: yours, mine and the truth. Following the deaths of a Black American boy and a young Orthodox Jewish scholar in the summer of 1991, underlying racial tensions in the nestled community of Crown Heights, Brooklyn erupted into civil outbreak. FIRES IN THE MIRROR was Anna Deavere Smith’s groundbreaking response. Birthed from a series of interviews with over fifty members of the Jewish and Black communities, the resulting play offers 26 characters, to be portrayed by one actor.
SEEKING a single actor to play multiple characters ages 30s-50s, any gender, African-American or mixed-race. One chameleonic, nuanced and engaging actor performs all characters in this series of monologues that was created from interviews about the 1991 Crown Heights riots. Characters include members of the African-American and Lubavitcher Jewish communities in Crown Heights, Brooklyn as well as those who comment on US race relations - Ntozake Shange, The Reverend Al Sharpton, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, and others. Requires the ability to embody many different kinds of people by skillfully navigating a wide range of vocal texture, physicality, tone, energy and dialect. Muscularity, depth and precision of inhabiting multiple roles are necessary. Vocal strength and transformational ability a must.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernizing 1950s Houston, the Kidder family’s lives are turned upside down once again when a figure from their son’s past shows up in town. They deny, deflect and deceive in an effort to avoid the danger but can’t avoid the inevitable reckoning.

Guitars tuned. Mic checked. Get ready to rock. This darkly funny, electric new play with music tells the story of a Khmer Rouge survivor returning back to Cambodia for the first time in thirty years as his daughter prepares to help prosecute one of Cambodia's most infamous war criminals. Backed by a live band playing contemporary Dengue Fever hits and classic Cambodian oldies, this thrilling story toggles back and forth in time as father and daughter face the music of the past.
Note: CHUM, SOTHEA, LENG, ROM, and POU are bandmates in the fictional 1970s Cambodian rock band The Cyclos. The music is raucous, loud, bubblegum, dissonant psychedelic surfer rock. Rock background or band experience a plus.
CHUM
Male, 51 and 18, Cambodian. Neary’s lovable, well-meaning, and wary father in 2008… full of charisma and dad jokes, purposefully withholding his history from Neary, and just trying to bring her back to safety in America. Unsettled by her interest in the dangerous Khmer Rouge. We also see him as a sincere, optimistic young man in the 1970s, caught between fleeing Cambodia and sticking with his beloved band The Cyclos. More of a fighter than we may initially expect. MUSIC: Lead Guitar or Bass Guitar, vocals. Serves mainly as an actor but instrumental skill a necessity. CAST
NEARY
Female, 26, Cambodian-American (also plays SOTHEA). Headstrong, intelligent, and ambitious. Grew up in Massachusetts, and has spent the past two years investigating war crimes in Cambodia. There is also a vulnerable quality about her—she’s a little lost, because she hasn’t figured out a part of her own history. She’s a strong young woman, but also a child wanting to connect with her father. MUSIC: Lead vocals (powerful belter who can let loose vocally, and with personality), tambourine. Serves mainly as an actor but vocal skill a necessity.
LENG
Male, 20s, Cambodian (also plays TED, Neary's supportive Thai-Canadian boyfriend). Chum’s best friend and bandmate in the 1970s, frontman for the band who focuses on the group's professional future as a way to avoid thinking about Cambodia's political turmoil and what it might mean for him. Will do anything to survive and can control the room, despite being conflicted by moral choices. Underneath his bravado, we find he's bit of a coward. MUSIC: Bass Guitar or Lead Guitar, vocals. Serves mainly as an actor but instrumental skill a necessity.
DUCH
Male, 30s/40s/maybe 50s, Cambodian. The physicality and presence of a spirited emcee and trickster. Vivacious, funny, mischievous. A leader. Incredibly educated and charming… but with a darkness underneath it all. The ability to suddenly transform into a terrifying and sadistic man. We’re seduced by him in Act 1, before finding out he’s a war criminal in Act 2. Justifies his actions by saying he’s only following orders, but we see that he is haunted. Hides his true passions in order to amass great destructive power. MUSIC: No musical skill necessary, but music background a plus.

Ready, set, fry! It’s time for the annual Hot Wang Festival in Memphis, Tennessee, and Cordell Crutchfield knows he has the wings that’ll make him king. Supported by his beau Dwayne and their culinary clique, The New Wing Order, Cordell is marinating and firing up his frying pan in a bid to reclaim the crispy crown. When Dwayne takes in his troubled nephew however, it becomes a recipe for disaster. Suddenly, a first place trophy isn’t the only thing Cordell risks losing.

One verdict can change the course of history. The news of the police officers’ acquittal in Rodney King’s police brutality case reverberated throughout the streets of Los Angeles. Variously called a “riot, a revolution, or a social explosion,” the events that followed the verdict drew worldwide attention. Playwright, actor and scholar Anna Deavere Smith responded artistically by dissecting the anatomy of the unrest. She interviewed over 350 Los Angelinos in preparation for the performance. Declared a “rich, panoramic canvas of a national trauma” by The New York Times, Smith’s transformative study of the 1992 L.A. riots reveals the fault lines that set the city ablaze.

Sarah, a savvy slave turned Union spy, and Sandra, a brilliant professor in a modern-day private university, are facing similar struggles, even though they live over a century apart. This New York premiere by MacArthur Genius Fellow Dominique Morisseau, directed by Kamilah Forbes (By the Way, Meet Vera Stark), leaps through time in order to trace the identities of these two black American women and explore the reins that racial and gender bias still hold on American educational systems today.

Orange Girl/Sister Claire/Patience — Female, 20s. Any ethnicity. Orange Girl is attracted to Cyrano and not afraid to show it - which makes her progressive. Patience is a lady of the night who hates the upper class which makes her a revolutionary. All three are not exactly as they seem and are open to the special and particular something that the actor brings to the room. (She stayed when Roxanne was orphaned out of love and duty.) The Chaperone is akin to the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. She's sometimes overbearing but kind and loving; she's funny and has a huge heart.
