SEEKING

Equity actors for various roles in IN THE HEIGHTS and HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, as part of the upcoming 2018 BROADWAY CENTER STAGE Season at The Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center’s BROADWAY CENTER STAGE series presents fully staged concert versions of beloved musicals, including a full orchestra & chorus.

PREPARATION

Prepare a brief song appropriate to the season. Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Bring a headshot and resume, stapled together.

NINA: Female, 18- 23 Hispanic. A freshman at Stanford, burdened by the pressures of making a living and attending a top tier university. Smart and incredibly hard on herself. Lives in fear of being a disappointment to her family. Too proud to ask for help. Appealing, attractive, ambitious and, above all, warm. Vocal Range A3-F5.

KEVIN: Male, 40 - 55, Hispanic. Nina’s father. A family man. Quick to act. Hard working, focused, driven, and very proud. Stubborn and hot tempered at times, but does everything out of love. Protective of his business and those he loves, wary of outsiders, and desperate to be the best man and father he can be. Vocal range C4 - E5.

BENNY Male, 22-30, African American. Responsible, proud, and hard-working young man. Professional, and driven to be the best he can be. An outsider despite his best efforts to join the latino community. Charismatic, attractive, a good friend and a romantic at heart. Extremely respectful, joyful, funny, and kind. Vocal Range E3 - Ab4. Must rap.

VANESSA: Female, 18- 25, Hispanic. Strong, intelligent, attractive. A dreamer, desperate to escape The Heights and her alcoholic family. Has a hard time seeing past her own problems at times. She yearns so much for a different life that she does not appreciate what’s in front of her. Hard working, edgy, restless. Vocal Range Gb3 - E5.

SONNY: Male, 15 **SEEKING ACTUAL TEENAGER**, Hispanic. Usnavi’s cousin, and looks to Usnavi as a father figure. Lively and sassy, ambitious, naive, and passionate. A scrappy flirt, the charming jokester of the bodega. Protective of his family and community. Vocal Range G3 - Bb4. Must rap.

ABUELA CLAUDIA: Female, 64-75, Hispanic. The matriarch of the neighborhood, and everybody’s “Grandmother”. Generous, kind, and maternal. Wise, hard-working, strong, selfless, and beloved. Her own health never a priority, always thinking of others and their welfare over her own. Warm, comforting, and always seeing the positive in everyone. Vocal Range F#3 - C5.

DANIELA: Female, 25- 35, Hispanic. Owner of Daniela’s Salon. Savvy, quick witted, brassy and outspoken. Gossip queen of the neighborhood, but always well intentioned. Upbeat, generous, judgy, but ultimately a good friend. Fun, the life of the party and the leader of the ladies of the neighborhood. Vocal Range G3 - C5.

CARLA: Female, 20 - 28, Hispanic. Hairdresser at Daniela’s salon. Naive, innocent, and friendly. Not the brightest, and constantly falling for jokes. Daniela’s sidekick both in and out of the salon. She’s funny, brassy, and upbeat. Vocal Range G3 - C5.

GRAFFITI PETE: Male, 18-23, Any Ethnicity. Graffiti artist. Outspoken and scrappy, a harmless neighborhood troublemaker. A pain day-to-day, but a protector of the neighborhood in its time of need. Friendly, outgoing, positive, and creative. A true artist. A strong dancer, must rap.

J. PIERREPONT FINCH: Male, 22 - 30, Any Ethnicity. Our story’s protagonist. An irrepressible, clear-eyed, almost puckish hero, a window washer who applies for a job at the World Wide Wicket Company and attempts to climb the ‘ladder of success’. Enthusiastic dancer. Vocal Range C3 - G4.

ROSEMARY PILKINGTON: Female, 20 - 30, Any Ethnicity. A secretary at the company who is more interested in finding a man than advancing her career. Vocal Range A3 – B4

J.B. BIGGLEY: Male, 50-65, Any Ethnicity. The stuffed-shirt, philandering President of World Wide Wicket. Beneath his ruthless exterior, he is a college lad at heart with a passion for knitting. Vocal Range C3 – A4

HEDY LARUE: Female, 25-35, Any Ethnicity. A voluptuous, sexually-charged woman adored by all of the men. She may appear dim-witted, but she’s dumb like a fox. Vocal Range C4 – Eb5

BUD FRUMP: Male, 25-30, Any Ethnicity. Biggley’s nephew and a scheming employee. He is an arrogant sycophant who tries to advance his career by exploiting his family connections. Vocal Range C3 – F4

SMITTY: Female, 30-40 yrs old, Any Ethnicity. A secretary with a painfully dry sense of humor. She is a cynical, working woman who is on the lookout for a man. Vocal Range A#3 – G5

MISS JONES: Female, 40-60, Any Ethnicity. J.B. Biggley’s stuffy secretary who is abrupt and tough, but soft and kind to those who are good to her. Vocal Range Bb3 – Gb5

MR GATCH: Male, 40-60, Any Ethnicity. A sleazy executive with a penchant for the ladies.

MR. TWIMBLE: Male, 60-75, Any Ethnicity. A fussy, old-fashioned, yet loyal employee at the company. Supervisor of the mailroom, he believes his success is due to his lack of ambition and ability to remain unnoticed. Vocal Range C#3 – E4

WALLY WOMPER: Male, 55-70, Any Ethnicity. The company’s Chief Executive Officer and a former window-washer. Vocal Range D3 – E4
