PREPARATION

Please prepare a short R&B/soul, gospel, or contemporary musical theatre song in the style of John Legend that shows musicality and range. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please bring a headshot and resume stapled together.

CASTING NOTE: Please note that for the roles of Grandma Eliza, Peola and Young Peola/Chelsea, it is pivotally important that these roles are authentic to the characters. We encourage actors to research the source material, particularly the novel written by Fannie Hurst, to get a sense of why this is important to the storytelling.

DELILAH: ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED. Female (cis, trans or non-binary). Black, late 20s - 30s. Ambitious, warm, joyful, and a big bright spirit. Has an amazing singing voice and strong dancing skills.

BEA: ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED. Female (cis, trans or non-binary). White, late 20s - 30s. No nonsense, vivacious, ambitious, controlling. A life well lived in. Has an amazing singing voice and strong dancing skills.

ELROY: ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED. Male (cis, trans or non-binary). Black. 30s. Playful, loving and hopelessly romantic. Has an amazing singing voice and strong dancing skills.

YOUNG JESSIE: ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED. Female (cis, trans or non-binary), 9-11 years old. White. Bea’s daughter. Has an excellent singing voice.

GRANDMA ELIZA: Female (cis, trans or non-binary). 70s. A white-passing Black, Latina or bi-racial woman. Has presence. Elegant and expressive. Sings well.

PEOLA: Female (cis, trans or non-binary). Ages from 18 - 20s. A white-passing Black, Latina or bi- racial woman. Strong-willed, dynamic, and beautiful. Has an excellent singing voice. A very strong dancer.

YOUNG PEOLA/CHELSEA: Female (cis, trans or non-binary). 9-11 years old. A young, white- passing Black, Latina or bi-racial woman. Has an excellent singing voice.
