Synopsis

Hailed as an audience favorite at the 2020 Colorado New Play Summit, Hotter Than Egypt is the captivating tale of an American couple’s own personal revolutions.

No matter where you live, the ups and downs of married life are universal. For a middle-aged American couple traveling to Egypt on a business trip-slash-vacation, their relationship is put to the test when an old connection leads to new temptation. As the eager tourists strive to connect with Egyptian culture in an authentic way, they end up getting more than they bargained for as long-dormant marital issues begin to percolate.

Drawing from the political, cultural, and religious realities of living in the region, this quick-witted dramedy set in Cairo pits loyalty against attraction as its characters grapple with the ever-changing struggle of staying committed to their partners.

Middle East American Distinguished Playwright Award winner Yussef El Guindi specializes “in cultural and geographical displacement, from alienated couples to the promises and frustrations of immigration, and the ways people maneuver through foreignness and belonging” (Seattle Times).

SEEKING

No roles will be understudied.

MAHA: she/her, MENA (Middle Eastern/North African), late 20s to mid 30s. Maha is Egyptian. Charismatic and strong, but much more frustrated by her lot. She is ready to change her life now, and feels her fiancé isn't doing enough to make that happen. Former tour guide, aspiring fashion designer.

JEAN: she/her, white American from the U.S., late 40s to early 60s. There’s strength and endurance and an adventurousness that’s waiting to assert itself. Not a victim but a person who’s allowed herself to conform to other people’s expectations of her. Formerly a stay-at-home mother. She’s felt she’s had to play a role in a marriage that’s lost its heart. NOTE: The script requires the actor playing JEAN to be in a two piece bathing suit for about the first half-hour of the play.

BOATMAN/MUSEUM GUARD/ DOORMAN: he/him, MENA (Middle Eastern, North African), between 30s and 60s. Boatman: serene, compassionate, friendly. Museum Guard: officious, overbearing. Doorman: Too nosey, a gossip, wanting to know other people’s business.
