BREAKDOWN

The 21st Century rock version of the 17th Century play about love, honor, dynasty, deception, truth, redemption and loyalty. It's the play within a play, combining original music and lyrics (some creatively taken straight from the play dialogue) delivered through powerful rock ballads and anthems while honoring the traditional theatrical musical, all at the forefront of an elaborate modern set design and hi tech video and lighting, designed to support great actors, singers and dancers.

HAMLET, THE PRINCE OF DENMARK - Male, all ethnicities, 25-35 years old. A strong, brooding, sexy prince. HAMLET is a poet – complicated and sometimes cynical. A powerful presence. Some dancing and movement. Fencing experience a plus. VOCAL RANGE – middle C to high Bb

CLAUDIUS, THE KING OF DENMARK - Male, all ethnicities, 40+ years old. Charismatic, ambitious and manipulative king; often driven by his appetite for sex and power. CLAUDIUS is a powerful political operative, in total control – until he is not. Small dance and movement. VOCAL RANGE - middle C to high A

GERTRUDE, THE QUEEN OF DENMARK - Female, all ethnicities, 40+ years old. A regal, mysterious, stunning Queen – shallow and needy. Small dancing and movement. VOCAL RANGE – Bb to high G

OPHELIA - Female, all ethnicities, 20-30 years old. A vulnerable, sweet, innocent young girl finding her way through life. Beautiful and lost. High level of dance and movement. VOCAL RANGE – D to Eb

LAERTES - Male, all ethnicities, 25-35 years old. Ophelia’s brother. A scholarly, passionate, “quick to act” and fun-loving student. Handsome and popular. High level of dance and movement. Fencing experience a plus. VOCAL RANGE - middle C to high A

POLONIUS - Male, all ethnicities, 40+ years old. Father of Ophelia & Laertes. A pompous, concerned, conniving Lord Chamberlain of the court. Somewhat silly. Small movement. VOCAL RANGE – middle C to high F

HORATIO - Male, all ethnicities, 25-35 years old. Hamlet’s best friend. A caring, thoughtful, loyal, macho pal. High level of dance and movement. VOCAL RANGE – middle C to high Bb

NINE ENSEMBLE ROLES: Male and Female, all ethnicities, 20 - 45. A combo of strong dancers who sing and strong singers who move well.. They play a variety of roles (Soldiers, Party Goers, Traveling performers, Dream characters, etc.) among which are:

1. ROSENCRANTZ, a bumbling student-friend of Hamlet.

2. GUILDENSTERN, another bumbling student-friend of Hamlet.

3. HONEYBELLE, a country singer.

4. MARCELLUS, a guard. VOCAL RANGE – middle C to high G

5. THE GHOST, Hamlet’s deceased father.

6. FIRST PLAYER, VOCAL RANGE – middle c to high Eb

7, 8, 9. SERVANTS, SPIES, FOOLS, COURTIERS.
