SELF TAPE SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR AUDITION:

Framing your shot helps. Please make sure your phone/device is in landscape format and not portrait position.

Make sure the lighting is sufficient. Non-incandescent, bright white lighting that includes some diffusion (non direct, soft) is best.

The sound is important. Please make sure if using a reader that YOU are easily heard. An external mic (Lavalier) plugs into your device, is economical and sounds great.

Your background is clean. Please be aware of what's behind you. A busy or dark background can distract the viewer/listener.

Keep the slate separate from the actual audition. Slates can be your headshot or your live introduction, whichever you prefer.

Please feel free to listen to our podcast (2 episodes, 20 minutes each) on video auditions. The link is here:

SEEKING:

[RUDY] ROLE CAST. (Caucasian, early 60s, he/him): Joy’s father. A car salesmen-esque character of a man who over-promises and under delivers despite meaning well. He is crass, yet charming at the same time and spends much of the musical going at it with his ex-wife. Very skilled with comedy. Strong baritone/tenor range - up to G/Ab.

[TONY] ROLE CAST. (any race or ethnicity, mid 30s, he/him): Joy’s ex-husband. A Sinatra wannabe who starts the musical living in his ex-wife’s basement waiting for his career as a performer to take off. His heart is in the right place, but he doesn’t follow through, forgetting to pick his daughter up at school, not paying any of the bills, etc. He is all charm and also a mess. Strong tenor.

[CHRISTIE] (any race or ethnicity, 10, she/her): Joy and Tony’s daughter. Whip smart, especially when it comes to emotional intelligence. She is perceptive, insightful, and sometimes a little too clever for her own good, but she also has moments of vulnerability in which we are reminded that she’s just a 10 year old who needs her parents to come through for her. A very strong singer; Christie has two numbers of her own and is present throughout most of the show. Strong belt with head/mix.

[RONNI] ROLE CAST. (Black, late 30s, she/her): A low-level businesswoman at QVC who constantly has to fight for her place in the corporate world. She is grounded, but determined and constantly code switching. Strong pop belt.

[COWBOY EDDIE] ROLE CAST. (Caucasian, late 40s - early 50s, he/him): A bigoted, cunning, and cruel man who attempts to swindle Joy out of her money and take her invention away from her. Eddie is from Texas and has a very thick accent. Ensemble.

[DAN] ROLE CAST. (any race or ethnicity, mid 30s, he/him): An executive at QVC who gives Joy her big break. While he looks and acts like your typical young-ish whippersnapper businessman, he also has passion and heart that reveal themselves as we get to know him. He believes in Joy and is determined to see her succeed. Ensemble.

[THELMA] ROLE CAST. (any race or ethnicity, early 40s, she/her): Rudy’s enigma of a new girlfriend whom he met dancing at the Havana Club. Thelma speaks in a French accent, but we learn partway through the musical that it’s all an act to up her intrigue. Very skilled with comedy. Strong alto (up to an E).

[YOUNG JOY] (Caucasian, 9, she/her, covers Christie): The younger, more carefree version of Joy who is always inventing things and coming up with new ideas. She is inquisitive, excitable, and clever.

Clyde’s, by Lynn Nottage

1st Rehearsal January 3, 2023

Opening February 3, 2023

In CLYDE’S, a truck stop sandwich shop offers its formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at redemption. Even as the shop’s callous owner tries to keep them under her thumb, the staff members are given purpose and permission to dream by their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich.

SEEKING:

Actors with strong comedic timing are encouraged to submit.

Clyde: 40s - 50s. BIPOC. Runs the truck stop sandwich shop.. She is the bully in charge. Loves to exert her power and delights in cruelty. Operates from a place of dominating and humiliating others. Seductive.

Montrellous: BIPOC. 40s-late 50’s. Working class. Served many years in prison. Having learned from his earlier mistakes, he is now the master of zen. Operates from a place of love. Kind and nurturing. A mentor, especially to his younger colleagues. Uses cooking as a means of meditation.

Letitia: Mid-late 20s. Black. Working class. Recently released from prison. Trying to rebuild her life. Needs this job. Is the mother of a child with health issues. In a toxic relationship, but hopes to find a good guy. A survivor. Street smart. Trying to live a more mindful life. Very funny.

Rafael: Mid-late 20s. Latinx. Working class. Formerly incarcerated. A romantic. In love with Letitia. Playful, funny, charming. Underneath it all is a sensitive guy with a heart of gold. Working to find a more spiritual path. Terrified of Clyde.

Jason: Mid-20s - early 30s. White. Working class. Served 8 years in prison. Painted with White supremacist tats. Starts out gruff and seemingly detached but eventually opens up to show his vulnerable side.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Conceived by Rebecca Feldman

Additional Materials by Jay Reiss

Music and Lyrics William Finn

Book by Rachel Sheinkin

Director Colin Hanlon

Dates:

1st Rehearsal: February 14, 2023

Opening March 17, 2023

Closing April 9, 2023

Seeking:

Chip Tolentino/Jesus: Chip never loses. Never. Until... He’s incredibly confident, charming and outgoing. Chip enters the Bee having won the Putnam Bee previously. Everyone knows this. He’s a little older than the other spellers and puberty is hitting him first. This hormonal change begins to impede his chances of becoming this year’s champion. Chip masks his insecurities with tons of bravado and yet we still love him.

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere: The youngest of the Putnam spellers, she’s an adorable spitfire. Seemingly put together at most times, she’s incredibly stressed because of internal pressure and pressure from her two fathers. She’s incredibly proud to come from a family of LGBTQIA+ parents and will tell everyone. She has a speech impediment and potentially some nervous physical tics but this will never slow her down. Well versed in politics and social issues, she can debate anyone willing to take her on. No one has practiced for this Bee harder than Logainne and it shows. She’s polite and adroit in all situations.

Leaf Coneybear/Carl Dad: No one is more pumped to be at the Bee than Leaf! He was the runner up and was shocked when he got the call to compete. Leaf is fascinated by everything and amused by everyone. He’s a kid in Disneyland for the first time. Leaf is the youngest of too many siblings and struggles to find his place at home. Potentially suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), he finds joy in where his mind takes him. Leaf has the grandest imagination of the kids because he never edits or apologizes for where his mind takes him. He NEVER comes in thinking he’ll win. He simply delights in being included and respected by kids his own age. Leaf never goes anywhere without his favorite helmet.

William Barfee: Boisterous and cocky, yet meek and insecure all at once. William is a handful and he doesn’t care what you think because he always wins. He comes into the competition with his eye on the prize and is not looking for friends or connection. His way to be seen and respected is by winning. William has many health ailments. Some small and some potentially large. That being said, this never holds him back. It’s just his given circumstances and he wants no pity from anyone. He has a soft spot for his mom and an even bigger one for Olive.

Marcy Park: She is the most skilled at, honestly, everything. She knows it. She speaks six languages, among many other incredible skills. It’s not a big deal to her cause she’s just good at everything. That’s why spelling comes naturally to her without much effort. Confident without being cocky, Marcy is very dry which gets misconstrued often for her not caring or not having emotion. The truth is she has so many feelings but lacks the ability to express them in an open manner. She’s never lost.

Olive Ostrovsky: A single child, she daydreams about words each and every day. There she finds peace and comfort. While most kids are playing with friends or outside, Olive reads the dictionary alone. And oh boy, does she love it. She’s from a challenging home with absent parents but never gives up on love. She’s wildly smart and very attentive to other spellers needs. Polite and painfully shy, spelling is what brings Olive the most joy.

Rona Lisa Perretti/Olive’s Mom: The way most straight men love the Superbowl is how Rona feels about Spelling Bees & She’s the 3rd Annual Putnam County Spelling Champion and she’ll tell you about it. Never a braggart though, rather sweet and proud of her accomplishments. She’s the local realtor and has hosted the bee for countless years. Rona is 100% in charge of the bee. She’s incredibly organized and knows how things should run. She acts as our audience guide in explaining the rules and expectations throughout the night. All of the children know her and respect her. She should feel like your favorite grade school teacher who warranted love and authority.

Vice Principal Douglas Panch: Was not supposed to be here today. He begrudgingly is filling in as the guest judge. He’s dreamed of being the Principal of Lake Hemingway Dos Passos Junior High but life hasn’t afforded him that position. He’s forever Vice Principal. He doesn't really care about spelling but enjoys the slight power he’s getting here today. Doug is never mean to the kids but he definitely has an edge to him. The kids often push back on him throughout the bee and he in turn does the same. He should feel more like a grumpy older brother. He takes the rules seriously because he desperately wants to impress Miss. Rona.

Mitch Mahoney/Dan Dad/Olive’s Dad: He’s here today doing his community service. He’s a book that has always been judged by his cover. He’s big and strong which is often misconstrued as threatening. Mitch has a heart of gold and is the consignment truth-teller. The kids may be leery of him at first but he quickly becomes their perfect comfort counselor.. He finds this spelling bee completely bizarre but comes around to it once he sees how much the kids truly love it. He’s lost a lot in life and has developed acute coping skills. Mitch graciously helps teach the spellers about losing with dignity.
