BREAKDOWN

It is the morning after Frankie (a waitress) and Johnny (a short-order cook who works in the same restaurant) have spent the night together, and Frankie is hopeful that Johnny will now put on his clothes and depart so she can return to her usual routine of watching TV and eating ice cream. But Johnny, a compulsive talker and romantic, has other ideas. He is convinced that he loves Frankie, a notion that she, at first, considers to be ri-diculous. She has had more disappointments than delights in life, and he is the veteran of one broken mar-riage already. And neither of them is in the bloom of youth. Yet out of their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay, the promise of a relationship beyond a one-night stand begins to emerge.

The roles of FRANKIE and JOHNNY have been CAST. Seeking understudies only.

FRANKIE UNDERSTUDY
Female, non-Caucasian. A strong, big-hearted woman of color in her early 40’s from Allentown, PA. Frankie is a high school dropout and a failed actress who works as a waitress at a Manhattan diner. She has a sense of humor and fairly tough exterior. She is also frightened and can be very hard to reach. A realist, Frankie is reluctant to lower her guard. Life has offered many disappointments. Although she is quick witted, there is something sorrowful about her. She apologizes too much and doesn’t like being looked at. Striking but not conventional good looks.

JOHNNY UNDERSTUDY
Male, any ethnicity. A passionate, big-hearted man in his late 40’s. A short order cook in a Manhattan diner, recently re-leased from prison for forgery. Keeps a dictionary and a copy of Shakespeare in his locker at work. From Allentown PA, but grew up in the foster homes across the country. Johnny is nervy, persistent, talkative, sensitive, romantic. He is at once both dangerous and wholesome. Johnny’s best feature is his personality. He works at it. He is in good physical condition.
