Breakdown

SEEKING:

Four actors (to play early 20’s). All need “recording star” quality solo vocal pipes, and superlative tight harmony skills. All need to be honest, simple, and sincere actors able to take the audience beyond the stereotype of a nerd to the handsome, sexy, powerful man inside each Plaid.

FRANCIS:
the leader of the group. He has the most confidence and takes care of his fellow PLAIDS making sure everyone (including the audience) knows what is supposed to happen next. He has asthma which acts up whenever the numbers are too fast, or the choreography too energetic. He has a great deal of compassion for the music and the group.
Second tenor to Ab – sings “Three Coins in the Fountain” and “Chain Gang” .

SPARKY:
the “cut-up” of the group. He is always looking for ways to crack jokes. He is very sharp and loves singing his tailor-made solos. He wears a retainer and has a slight speech impediment.
Baritone to G# - sings “Perfidia” and “Catch a Falling Star”

JINX:
the shy one. He is terrified-doesn’t always remember what song or step comes next. He occasionally gets a nose bleed when he sings above an A. Finds his voice and his confidence when he blows the roof off of the theatre when he belts out the high Bb in his solo: “Cry”
Tenor to Bb – sings “Cry”

SMUDGE:
the worrier. Has a chronic nervous stomach and worries about everything: the props, the audience, the running order. Convinced the audience won’t like him and reluctant to perform. He is dyslexic regarding his left and right foot so choreography is a challenge. Underneath the nervous tics and the thick glasses however is a sexy matinee idol waiting to burst out – which it does when he throws off the glasses and belts out “Rags to Riches”.
Bass to G (needs a true bass bottom sound for “16 Tons”) – sings “16 Tons” and “Rags to Riches”
