BREAKDOWN

This world premiere play by four-time Tony Award® winner Terrence McNally (“Ragtime”, “Kiss of the Spider Woman”) explores the rich history of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev’s itinerant Russian ballet company, in his newest play “Fire and Air”. Surrounded by great talents of art, design, and music, the tempestuous relationship between Diaghilev and dancer Vaslav Nijinsky revolutionizes dance forever.

Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev: (Male, late 30s - early 40s) A Russian impresario; a visionary; a robust, impressive, and powerful man. Homosexual.

Vaslav Nijinsky: (Male, 20s) Diaghilev's young protégé and lover; once a peasant, but now a revolutionary ballet dancer and a radical choreographer; muscular, elegant, ambitious, narcissistic, and an intense perfectionist.

Dmitry Dima Filosofov: (Male, late 30s - early 40s) Diaghilev's first cousin; his oldest and dearest friend and business manager. Also a homosexual.

Dunya: (Female, 60s) Diaghilev's old and faithful nurse, almost always knitting, but ready to be of service to him (and the play at large) the moment the need arises; she has been his nanny since he was born. Grounded, wise in her own way.

Misia Sert: (Female, 40s-50s) Diaghilev's beautiful wealthy patron and friend; deeply invested in the future and importance of artistic life; a witty, fearless, powerful woman of her time.

Leonide Massine: (Male, 20s) a young classical dancer. Highly sexual. Ambitious and self-serving.
