TEVYE – 40s-50s; A poor dairyman, philosophic, humorous, a loving father to his five daughters, a long-suffering husband, friendly, good-natured but has a volcanic temper.

GOLDE – 40s-50s; Tevye’s long-suffering wife; character woman with good comic ability; strong; protective of her family; loving but not especially warm; worthy adversary to Tevye.

TZEITEL – 20s; Tevye’s eldest daughter; she is Golde in training but still has the warmth and joy of youth.

HODEL – 20s; Tevye’s second daughter; smart; strong; independent, excellent mezzo soprano.

CHAVA – 18 -28; Tevye’s third daughter; sweet; loving; shy but romantic; a bookworm; Tevye’s favorite.

MOTEL – 20s-30s; Local tailor; meek and mild but has strength underneath, has good comic ability; in love with Tzeitel.

PERCHIK – 20s; Revolutionary student; zealous and passionate; believes in his culture and its traditions but is a reformer, strong baritone with some tenor notes.
