FENCES
TROY MAXSON - Troy is fifty-three years old, Black. A large man with thick, heavy hands; it is this largeness that he strives to fill out and make an accommodation with. Together with his blackness, his largeness informs his sensibilities and the choices he has made in his life. He is a master storyteller and charmer, loves being both.
JIM BONO - Troy’s friend. Black. Of the two men, Bono is obviously the follower. His commitment to their friendship of thirty-odd years is rooted in his admiration of Troy’s honesty, capacity for hard work, and his strength, which Bono seeks to emulate. Bono is huge in heart.
ROSE - Troy’s Wife. Black. She is ten years younger than Troy, her devotion to him stems from her recognition of the possibilities of her life without him: a succession of abusive men and their babies, a life of partying and running the streets, the Church, or aloneness with its attendant pain and frustration. She is a fun and beautiful spirit, but with a backbone, strong when she needs to be.
LYONS - Troy’s oldest son by previous marriage. Black. Lyons sports a neatly trimmed goatee, sport coat, white shirt, tieless and buttoned at the collar. Though he fancies himself a musician, he is more caught up in the rituals and “idea” of being a musician than in the actual practice of the music.
GABRIEL - Troy’s brother. Black. He is seven years younger than Troy. Injured in World War II, he has a metal plate in his head. He carries an old trumpet tied around his waist and believes with every fiber of his being that he is the Archangel Gabriel.
CORY - Troy and Rose’s teenage son. Black. He is an aspiring athlete being actively recruited for a college football scholarship, which he hopes to earn in order to eventually play football professionally.
