Breakdown
RICHARD RODGERS – Age 25-35. Medium height and build. The Broadway composer - solid and driven a businessman type as much as a musician. Rooted, often dour, a no-nonsense center of gravity. This actor should be a good, confident singer, baritone or tenor. Legit voice OK, but not required. Piano playing skills a plus.
LORENZ HART – Age 25-35. The Broadway lyricist. Short in height (absolutely no taller than 5’6”) dark Italian or Jewish type, a high energy, brilliant and unfocused New Yorker. Strong comedic and string singing skills are necessary; light baritone or tenor. A trained, legit voice is OK, but not required. Some dancing.
FLETCHER MECKLEN – Age: Must be Mid-20’s. Medium to tall, excellent build. Exceptionally good looking country boy type. The role is a handsome, charming, Broadway actor-singer-dancer of the 30’s. By turns an innocent and a seducer, always a sharp, quick learner. A trained singing voice is required, baritone or tenor. Some dancing.
VIVIAN ROSS – Age: 30 to 40. A 30’s glamorous Broadway star. Flashy personality, a sensual star presence, a solid belter and comedienne. Some dancing. Trained voice, Broadway belt style. Possibility of a name actress here – from pop music or cabaret worlds.
MULTI-ROLE: DOROTHY RODGERS / POLICEWOMAN / PEGGY – Age 20-30. Average height / weight. A skill with comic characterizations is essential. Solid, trained singer, soprano or mezzo.
DOC BENDER – Age: 30-40. Slick backstage Broadway type of the 30’s. Medium height, any build. A manipulator with an oily, sleaziness about him. Good singer – baritone or tenor, but not necessarily a legit voice. Some dancing.
