PREPARATION

Please prepare one monologue or two brief contrasting monologues to total approximately three minutes. There are no musicals in the season; no singing please. Each actor must bring one head shot with a resume attached to the back of the photo.

A DOLL’S HOUSE

The play follows the story of Nora, a young wife and mother, who appears to have a perfect life with her husband Torvald. However, Nora has been keeping a secret from her husband that threatens to unravel her entire world.

Seeking:

Nils Krogstad (Male presenting – 35-50): One of Torvald’s employees at the bank with a sketchy past. He is desperate to re-establish himself as a respectable man.

The following roles are CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Nora Helmer (Female presenting– 35-45): Wife and mother, she is playful, smart, witty, bright and alive. She grows in strength, self-awareness and honesty as the play progresses.

Kristine Lind (Female presenting – 40’s): Nora’s school friend, she is a widow who returns to town to find work. Sensible, clear-thinking and able to make strong choices.

Anne Marie (Female presenting – 60’s): Family nurse.

Torvald Helmer (Male presenting– 35-45): Nora’s husband, he is an ambitious and professional bank manager. A very traditional view of his wife, marriage and the world. He adores his wife, his home and his life. He is very concerned with appearances.

Doctor Rank (Male presenting– 50’s): Medical doctor who is an old family friend of Nora and Torvald., he visits often. He is ailing.

THE CHINESE LADY

Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman to step foot in America in 1834, this play follows her to New York, where she is destined to become a living curiosity in a museum. As she becomes well-known as a commodified oddity, she struggles to maintain her sense of self and her connection to her heritage.

Seeking:

Atung (Male presenting – 30-50): Atung is a manservant employed by Afong Moy’s masters to help her and translate for her to audiences.

The following role is CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Afong Moy (Female presenting– 30-50): She begins the play as an optimistic representative of her culture who sees herself as an ambassador. As she experiences America and its people over the years of her life, we see the evolution of her worldview and her understanding of her role.

DIAL M FOR MURDER

This classic murder mystery follows Tony Wendice, a former tennis player who concocts a plan to murder his wealthy wife, Margot. With the help of a sharp-witted detective, Margot fights to clear her name and reveal the truth about her husband’s deadly scheme gone awry.

Seeking:

Inspector Hubbard (Male presenting – 35-60): A police inspector.

The following roles ARE CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Margot Wendice (Female presenting – 30-50): The charming, naïve, and wealthy wife of Tony, she has no idea that Tony knows of her past affair with Max, nor does she suspect that Tony is planning to murder her.

Maxine Headley (Female presenting – 30-50): An American murder mystery writer, she had an affair with Margot during the time Tony was playing professional tennis tournaments in America. She is still in love with Margot and comes to visit the couple in London.

Tony Wendice (Male presenting – 30-50): Margot’s husband, he is a former professional tennis player who married Margot for her money. He is selfish and arrogant and has an elaborate scheme to murder Margot because of jealousy over a past affair between Margot and Maxine.

Lesgate (Male presenting – 30-50): An old schoolmate of Tony’s and a convicted criminal, he is now being blackmailed by Tony into murdering Margot. He seems willing to do anything for money.

CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY

17-year-old Ernestine Crump adjusts to her new life in 1950s Brooklyn after the passing of her mother. Amidst navigating her grief, she finds herself, both physically and spiritually, in an unfamiliar place where odds seem stacked against her. Caught between her father’s spirituality and her aunt’s activism, she learns to find her own definition of the American Dream.

Seeking:

Lily Ann Green (Female presenting – Black – 30-45): The sister of Godfrey’s Crump’s deceased wife, she is a communist, a free thinker from Harlem. She is bold, sexually liberated, and troubled.

Ernestine Crump (Female presenting – Black – 17): The older daughter of Godfrey Crump, the play is told through her eyes. She is mature for her age, nostalgic, and shy.

Ermina Crump (Female presenting – Black – 13): She is the younger sister of Ernestine and the second daughter of Godfrey Crump. She is sharp, smart-alecky, and anxious.

The following roles are CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Gerte Crump (Female presenting – 30-45): She is a German immigrant who just moved to America after World War II. She is sweet and impressionable and longs for acceptance.

Godfrey Crump (Male presenting – Black – 35-50): The family patriarch who, overcome by grief for his recently dead wife, just moved to Brooklyn with his two daughters. He is loving, religious, and often both stoic and awkward.

THE BOOK CLUB PLAY

This hilarious play follows Ana and her friends whose book club becomes the subject of a legendary documentarian. All appears to be going as planned until an unexpected new member throws the group’s dynamics into chaos.

Seeking:

Jennifer McClintock (Female presenting – 30’s): Ana's friend. Pretty. Shy. Smart. Tends to burst out with awkward truthful comments. Despite some lack of self-confidence, she is the grounding center of the group. Unorganized and oblivious to her own attractiveness. Unmarried.

Lily Louise Jackson (Female presenting – Black – 20’s): A go-getter. Former debate captain who is on the cusp of all current trends and yet can still put her foot in her mouth in social occasions. Laughs at appropriate and inappropriate times. A great lover of books and Ana's protege at the paper.

The following roles ARE CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Ana Smith (Female presenting – 30’s): Beautiful. Charming. Smart. Accomplished. Organized. A columnist for a daily paper. The Mother Bee. Her grace masks a need to control.

William Lee Nothnagel (Male presenting– 30’s): Rob's conservative, well-read, well-dressed, disciplined college roommate. Ana’s former boyfriend. History buff. Unmarried.

Alex (Male presenting– 30’s): The new guy. A very smart, well-read academic who has lost his moorings and is searching for real connection. Professor of comparative literature.

Pundit (Any gender – 30-60): Sam, Wal-Mart guy; Frank, Secret Service agent; Elsa, jaded literary agent; Mrs. Simpson, sky diver; Carl, inmate book dealer.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
