Breakdown
SON – Lucille’s son, Pauline’s fiancee. He manages the Gordon estate and Stella’s finances. His ex-wife died in a car accident a year earlier. He dropped out of college after his father died to help run the estate. STELLA GORDON – The no-nonsense octogenarian matriarch of the Gordon family. She refuses to allow her children to divide her land and assets while she’s alive. Though dementia dulls her memory, Stella is sharp-witted and sticks to her guns. LUCILLE – Stella’s complacent daughter, a widow, who lives on the estate to help care for it with her son, Son. MILDRED – a sassy black cook who works at the Gordon estate. DOUG – a ninety-two year old black housekeeper who has worked at the Gordon estate since his father died when he was five. Though he is physically weak and mentally crazy, Doug wants to keep working. LEWIS GORDON – Stella’s son and Lucille’s brother, an alcoholic gambler who is always begging for money from his share of the estate. He fools around with a high school girl, Irene Ratliff. PAULINE – Son’s fiancée, a high school English teacher. Though she is more intellectual and worldly than any of the Gordons, she tries earnestly to make a good impression with the chaotic family. CATHLEEN – A young, emotional black employee who attends junior college. Her abusive father is in jail. SISSIE – Mary Jo’s self-absorbed daughter. Divorced from her husband the previous fall, she is already planning to remarry. EMILY – Mary Jo’s snooty, materialistic daughter. Her parents annulled her week-long marriage to a boy she describes as “obnoxious.” BOB – Mary Jo’s husband. An out-of-work realtor who says he wants to divide the estate to prevent the loss of thousands of dollars in taxes. He always has a scheme to get everybody rich. IRENE RATLIFF – The dim-witted high school girl Lewis fooled around with. He paid $10,000 to her father so he wouldn’t kill Lewis.
