Breakdown

"Dissonance": A west coast premiere about the relationships and conflicts within a string quartet preparing for their 10th anniversary concert, when a rock star asks for music lessons. Egos, loyalty, and love are all put to the test in this witty and moving play about music and musicians.

JAMES - 50s. ENGLISH. The violinist. Brilliant, charismatic, over-bearing, controlling, narcissistic, bitter, lonely. Musician score: 9 1/2 out of ten. Actor does not need to play violin.

PAUL - 40s. ENGLISH. The violist. Passive-aggressive, gentle, sexually ambiguous, needs the quartet more than anyone, loving. Maybe his trousers don't quite reach his shoes. Musician score: 8 1/2 out of ten (good for a violist). Actor does not need to play viola.

HAL - 30s. The Second Violinist. An intellectual. Ambitious, boyish, confrontational (within the confines in which he finds himself), gullible, self-deluding, vulnerable. Musician score: 7 1/2 out of ten. Actor does not need to play violin.

BETH - 30s. The Cellist. Charming, manipulative, pragmatic, sexy, when we meet her feeling a little trapped and impatient. Musician score: 8 out of ten. Actor does not need to play the cello.

JONNY - 30s. The Rock Star. Honest, kind, giving, earnest, serious, certainly the most normal person we see in the play. Must be able to play the GUITAR. And SING. Fairly WELL. Musician score: irrelevant.
