BREAKDOWN
THE TENTH MUSE
JESUSA: A 19-year-old Mestiza (half Spanish/half Indigenous) girl who grew up as a servant. Sparkly, charming. Bright.
TOMASITA: A 20-year-old Nahua Indian. An observer. A survivor. So smart.
MANUELA: The 18-year-old daughter of a well-off Peninsular (Spaniard-born landowner). A brat. Thinks very highly of herself.
SOR RUFINA: 40’s-50’s. A Criolla (full Spanish-descent) nun. Grouchy.
SOR FILOMENA: 40's-50’s. Spanish born nun. Big, jolly cook. A bit of a drunk.
SOR ISABEL: Early 40’s. A bad-ass, forward-thinking Criolla nun. But since it's 1715, she's caged. And going blind.
MOTHER SUPERIOR: 60’s–70’s, Spanish born. Terrifying.
VARIOUS OTHER NUNS
A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER
MONTAGUE “MONTY” NAVARRO: 30's. Baritenor. Effortlessly charming and clever.
THE D'YSQUITH FAMILY: 30's-50's One comic actor who can play a full range of farcical characters. Physical comedy and stamina is a necessity. Does not necessarily need to be a phenomenal singer, but one who can deliver musical comedy with gusto.
SIBELLA HALLWARD: 20's-30's. Mezzo-soprano. A flirtatious, narcissistic social climber with a big heart.
PHOEBE D’YSQUITH: 20's-30's. Coloratura soprano. Virtuous romantic with a bite.
MISS SHINGLE: 50's-60's. Mezzo-soprano. A Cockney governess. Hilarious.
VARIOUS CHORUS ROLES: 6-8 actors to be in the chorus as well as multiple ensemble roles, including Tour Guide, Miss Evangeline Barley, Tom Copley, Lady Eugenia D'Ysquith, Chief Inspector Pickney, and Magistrate.
