Breakdown
DAMES AT SEA is a musical "valentine," a spoof of the Golden Age of the lavish 1930's Busby Berkeley movie musicals. Actors should be familiar with the acting style of these films and although the characters may seem to be movie stereotypes of that era, they maintain a honest sense of the good-hearted innocence and optimism with which these films were infused. There will be no dance call as part of the EPA, but all characters in the piece should dance well and be able to tap. Callbacks to be held Wednesday, February 29th, will include dance call. RUBY - Mezzo. Plays early 20's. A wide-eyed innocent girl from Centerville, Utah. At first shy, timid and in awe of the big city. She comes to seek fame and fortune as an dancer on Broadway. Stars on her eyes, tap shoes in her suitcase and love in her heart. She is our Heroine (a la Ruby Keeler) DICK - Tenor. 20's-early 30's. Our Hero. A young sailor with aspirations of making it as a Broadway composer. (ala Dick Powell) LUCKY - Baritone. 20's-mid 30's. Another young sailor, loves the ladies, a "cut up" and best friend to Dick. Former boyfriend to Joan. JOAN - Mezzo belt. 20's. A gum-chewing, wise-cracking chorus girl with a heart of gold. MONA - Alto. Late 20's-early 40's. The leading lady star of the show that is being produced. Ambitious and temperamental. Throws her diva weight around. HENNESY - Baritone. Mid 30's-late 40's. Tough-as-nails Broadway Producer/Director. Also plays Captain Courageous. CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS - Baritone. Mid 30's-late 40's. The gallant captain of the battleship that Dick and Lucky are stationed on. Once had a brief tropical affair with Mona. Also plays Hennesy.
