ONCE

Girl: Female, 25-40. Mezzo-Soprano. Direct, intelligent, no nonsense, and witty. Has had to work hard in life but doesn’t think she deserves any sympathy. Plays the piano and sings extremely well. Has a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.

Guy: Male, 25-40. Baritone. A struggling Irish musician. Works with his Da in a vacuum repair shop. Sings and plays guitar extremely well. Has a strong Irish accent.

Billy: Male, 30-49. Baritone. A large Irish man. Owner of the music store where Girl plays piano. Loud, funny and protective of Girl. Sings and plays guitar well. Has a strong Irish accent.

Reza: Female, 25-40. Soprano. A sexy, funny, smart Czech girl. Often a bit larger than life. Sings and plays violin/fiddle extremely well. Has a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.

Baruska: Female, 45+. Alto. Mother of Girl. A cool but caring Czech mother who likes a full house and full stomachs. Doesn’t possess many inhibitions. Sings and plays the accordion/mandolin well. Has a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.

Bank Manager: Any gender identity, 30-49. Any vocal type. Seems quite prim and proper but has a secret passion for music. Sings and plays guitar and cello well. Has a strong Irish (Cork) accent.

Da: Male, 50+. Any vocal type. Guy’s dad. A man of few words, but a lovely and caring father. Plays guitar, ukulele/mandolin well. Has a strong Irish accent.

Svec: Male, 20-39. Baritone. A real odd ball. Loves television and coffee. Plays guitar and drum kit extremely well. Has a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.

Andrej: Male, 20-29. Baritone. Earnest and kind. It works well if he has a slight build, made slighter by his oversized interview suit. An employee at a fast-food chain but has big dreams. Plays guitar and bass guitar extremely well. Has a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.

Eamon: Male, 20-49. Baritone. The music studio manager where Guy and Girl record their album. A tough nut to crack but eventually gives into the musicians’ talents. Sings and plays guitar (and piano) well. Has a strong Irish accent.

Emcee: Male, 20-49. Baritone. The emcee at a bar. A good-natured ball buster. Sings and plays guitar (and piano) extremely well. Has a strong Irish accent.

HAND TO GOD

Jason/Tyrone: Male, 18+ to play 17 years old. His father just died, and he is introverted, anxious, and struggling with so much emotion that he cannot put into words. But able to unleash with unabandoned control with the help of his sock puppet, Tyrone. Who is really in control. Has high puppeteer skills.

Timothy: Male, 18+ to play 17 years old. Jason is seemingly mild-mannered and polite; retiring, inarticulate, and shy; has an alter-ego who is extremely aggressive, foul-mouthed, shameless, and highly articulate. Timothy; high school alpha male; dexterity with hand puppet a plus.

Jessica/Jolene: Female, 18+ to play 17 years old. Suppressed by the world around her, has a longing to be loved but doesn’t know how to achieve that. Pleasant, polite, and patient. Puppeteer for Jolene (the overly sexualized puppet.) Puppeteer skills. (Simulated puppet sex will be had with Jason/Tyrone.)

Margery: Female, 30-50. Margery is Jason's mother; highly stressed woman trying desperately to keep her family and life together after the death of her husband; strong sexuality; has a warm, passionate nature, but she's a powder keg about to explode.

Pastor Greg: Male 30 – 50. Small town pastor who is a little too interested in a member of his flock; leading man with a whiff of the buffoon clinging to him.
