PREPARATION

Prepare a brief contemporary or classical 3 minute monologue. You may also prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song. Please bring sheet music; a piano accompanist will be provided.

Bring TWO (2) copies of picture and resume, stapled together.

Leader
Male, 40-50, African-American. In Part 1, the leader of the “Chorus of Less Than Desirable Slaves.” Gruff, weathered, a field slave who has seen it all. Can tell what time it is by the position of the stars in the sky. Wears his authority with ease. Appears in Part 3 as 1st Runaway Slave: the leader of the “Chorus of Runaway Slaves.” Observant. Tough. Clear thinking. A good judge of people. Speaks with a quiet eloquence.

Second
Male, 40, African-American. The Leader’s sidekick. Quick, teasing wit. Loves to gamble and loves to win. A wise guy with a good heart and not much nerve. Also plays 2nd Runaway Slave: prone to the jitters, swings with ease from hope to despair, burning with the dream of freedom and determined to get it.

Third
Female, 50s, African-American. A rock solid slave woman. She’s seen everything and endured all. Determined, cheerful, practical, feisty. In Part 3 plays 3rd Runaway Slave: a slave woman who has left everything to make her way to freedom. Has uncommon people-sense, courage, and endurance.

Fourth/Odyssey Dog
This role has been cast.

The Oldest Old Man
Male, 60+, African-American. Appears in Part 1. Has been a slave his whole long life. If he ever had a family, he lost them years ago. He loves Hero as a son and basks in Hero’s affection and respect. Feeds on dreams of Hero’s success. Full of old lore and superstitions. An ancient, weathered, gnarled tree.

Hero/Ulysses
Male, 25-35, African-American. Appears in Parts 1,2,3. Is loved and admired by everybody, the Master’s favorite. Projects bravery, honesty, and integrity, but his soul is burdened by betrayals. Proud, hungry to succeed as a free man, to be an authentic hero, prone to jealousy, profoundly conflicted. His master named him Hero and that’s what he’s called in Part 1. By Part 3, he has renamed himself Ulysses.

Penny
Female, 25-35, African-American. Appears in Parts 1 and 3. Hero’s near-wife, who stays with Homer when Hero goes off to War, but remains committed to Hero. Dreams of freedom and marriage too. Bright, spirited, deeply loyal, warm, strong, practical, stoical. A young woman full of life and hope.

Homer
Male, 25-35, African-American. Appears in Parts 1 and 3. Hero’s best friend, a brother in spirit. He had his foot cut off years ago by Hero, who was forced to do it by the Master, after Homer tried to run away. Homer has never forgotten this. Loves Penny, wants justice for Hero’s betrayal, and above all, wants freedom. A fierce, bold, crippled rebel.

A Colonel
Male, 50s, White. Appears in Part 2. Hero’s owner. A West Texas farmer and the owner of some 10 slaves who boasts of owning 100. A blowhard prone to flights of lyricism and flashes of cruelty. Lies extravagantly but believes himself an honest man.

Smith
Male, 30-40. Smith is a man of color who passes as white. Appears in Part 2. A union Soldier now, freed when his master died. Sees Hero for the lost and confused man he is. Compassionate, frank. Canny. Proud to be free. Sees the dangers ahead with remarkable clarity. Politically sharp. A realist.

Female, late 20s- early 30s. A Syrian woman torn by the love of two men. Impulsive and unsure. Also plays Andrea: an American actress.

Youssif
Male, late 20s- early 30s. A Syrian man hopelessly in love with his best friend's girlfriend who sets out to win her. Passionate, determined. Also plays Daniel: an American actor.

Ahmed
Male, late 20s- early 30s. A Syrian man, ready to propose to his love, who becomes aware that his best friend has beat him to it. Earnest, hopeful. Also plays Martin: an American actor.

Bana
Female, late 20s- early 30s. A Syrian soap opera actress who discovers she’s been betrayed by her best friends and country. Has underlying anger and heartache. Also plays Laura: an American director and actress. As a director, she’s a little over her head.

Woman
Female, 20s-30s. Syrian or otherwise Middle Eastern. Speaks in Arabic. From the tenuous safety of a refugee camp, she tries to communicate the intent of the play within the play and the reality of the characters and life in a war zone. Works to keep her opinions and suffering to herself.

Interpreter
Male or Female, 20s-30s. A young man or woman who works at an international NGO. Speaks Arabic and English. Tries to be a neutral intermediary.
