Breakdown

NOTES:
It’s 1949; the war has ended and Eugene and his older brother Stanley are determined to break into show business as professional comedy writers. As their parents’ relationship unravels, the brothers convene in the upstairs bedroom of their Brighton Beach home to write and rehearse material; all the while trying to cope with their parent’s marital troubles.
Their big break is within their grasp, but when the brothers use their home life in Brighton Beach as inspiration for a radio comedy skit, the Jerome family may never be the same.

Kate Jerome: Late 40’s/early 50’s. Tough, hard exterior but has a vulnerable side. A stalwart homemaker devoted to her husband and family. Not afraid to stand up for herself.

Ben Jerome: To play 70’s. Stubborn, opinionated, has an unintentional sense of humor. Has confused, forgetful ramblings, but deep down feels tremendous compassion for his family.

Eugene Morris Jerome: Early 20’s. Still an innocent, honest. He’s a young man with a lot of heart. An aspiring comedy writer. We see the play through his eyes. Good natured, charismatic and appealing.

Stanley Jerome: Mid to late 20’s. A bit of a ladies man, outgoing, tougher than his younger brother Eugene. He is very focused on being a successful comedy writer. “A Jewish Cary Grant”.

Blanche Morton: Mid to late 40’s. She is very wealthy and prosperous. Softer, gentler than her sister Kate.

Jack Jerome: 50’s. Beleaguered, unsatisfied, but in his mind all of his decisions are justified. He hurts his family and regrets it, but it doesn’t stop him from leaving.
