Breakdown

BREATH AND IMAGINATION: THE STORY OF ROLAND HAYES by Daniel Beaty

ROLAND HAYES: Tenor/Lyric Baritone (35-40), African American male singer/actor with linguistic skills and vocal range that permit him to sing songs in French, German, and Italian as well as a cappella spirituals. Roland Hayes, son of a former slave, had a remarkable voice and strong belief in himself which propelled him from the rural south to performances in Carnegie Hall and Buckingham Palace. He pioneered the way for Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson. The play, told through song, movement, and scenes, requires actor to play different ages in his life; from early childhood through his teen years to a painful incident later in life after his family returns to the segregated South.

ANGEL MO: (45-55) Strong singer/actress. Roland's mother, a former slave, whose strength, passion and religious fervor is the driving force in her son's life after his father's untimely death. Disappointed when her son decides not to become a preacher, she turns her back on his dream of becoming a singer. But after she realizes his commitment and success against all odds, she becomes his strongest advocate. The actress can be the same age as the actor playing Roland.

ACCOMPANIST: Caucasian male Actor/Pianist experienced with playing classical music, arias, art songs, and spirituals. Plays behind the singers and, every so often, seamlessly steps away from the keyboard to perform all the other characters, black and white, male and female connecting and pushing the plotline of the play.
