BLACK CYPRESS BAYOU

Notes: All actors should have a strong facility with language and physical theatre. All characters speak with a rural East Texas accent.

SEEKING:

Vernita Manifold: 65, African American, an East Texas woman through and through. A bit broken by life but uses humor to mask her pain and secrets. Loves her daughters ferociously and will do anything to protect them. Doing her best to stop smoking. A beautiful singing voice is a plus but at the least she should be able to carry a good country tune. Mother of Lady and Meka.

LadyBird “Lady Manifold: 35, African American. The big sister. Deeply country but believes herself to be a city sophisticate. A know-it-all rule follower until she is pushed to her limits. (Then will definitely knuck if you buck.) Leads with logic and doesn’t do well with chaos. Needs people and things to be just so. Loves her family more than anything on earth.

RaeMeka “Meka” Manifold-Baler: 33, African American, The little sister. A tender-hearted free spirit. Real sweet but is never without her switchblade and pistol. Almost always under the influence of cannabis. Surprisingly sharp in moments of crisis.

Taysha Hunter: 25, very light skinned African American (in most rooms she is perceived as white). Has a wisdom and maturity that belies her young age.
