BECOMES A WOMAN tells the story of a 19-year-old girl, living with her family in Brooklyn and working at a five and dime store as a singer at the sheet music counter. Her co-workers describe her as “the kind that some smooth-tongued fellow will get hold of someday. When he’s through, she’ll be broken like that.” Which is exactly what happens, leaving her to pick up the pieces of her shattered life with an inspiring display of independence and courage.

SEEKING:

(Doubling assignments may change)

FRANCIE NOLAN (Female, 18+ to play 19, Any Ethnicity) Leading role. Singer at Kress’ Dime Store. In the first two acts: a timid, naive, and insecure girl, who is propositioned by every man she meets, but feels too terrified to go on a date. In the third act: a self-possessed, protective, fearless mother to her own baby girl. Comfortable singing with piano accompaniment.

FLORRY (Female, mid-20s, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE’s co-worker. Piano player at Kress’ Dime Store. Described as “flashily pretty,” a woman who is vivacious, experienced, and becoming jaded. Desperately jealous of the attention FRANCIE receives, which manifests in clever jabs and pointed criticisms. Proficient in piano.

(Female, late 30s, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE’s co-worker and a lodger of the NOLAN family. Saleswoman at Kress’ artificial flower counter. Low-maintenance and unglamorous, but surprisingly graceful in a simple, organic way. Supports FRANCIE during her greatest time of need, acting as a surrogate mother. Level-headed and open-hearted, partially as a result of a traumatic experience in her 20s.

LEONARD KRESS, JR. (Male, late 20s, Any Ethnicity) Son of the owner of Kress’ Dime Stores, and the father of FRANCIE’s child. Tall, handsome, well-groomed, and effortlessly well-dressed. Has virtually unlimited access to money and women. Deliriously charming at first, but over time reveals his superficiality and selfishness. Some proficiency with piano is a bonus.

MR. MALLOON/AGENT (Male, 30s-40s, Any Ethnicity) MALOON is the floor manager of Kress’ Dime Store. A stout, frustrated man who switches easily between scolding his employees and schmoozing with his boss’ son. AGENT is a representative of Caton’s Cabaret. A breezy, good-natured man who is extremely eager to cut a shiny deal for his client.

JIMMY O'NEILL (Male, mid 20s, Any Ethnicity) A taxi driver who incessantly professes his love for FRANCIE. Handsome, jaunty, and dopily desperate for a date.

MAX (Male, mid 40s, Any Ethnicity) An ambulance driver and boyfriend/fiancé to TESSIE. A kind hearted, thoughtful, and awkward man. He is unglamorous and wears ill-fitting clothing. Not handsome, but has a beautiful soul.

PA NOLAN/SOLITARY MAN (Male, mid 40s, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE’s father and a policeman. Short-tempered, irrational, and obsessed with feeling powerful. Treats his family terribly unkindly, especially MA. Wears parts of his police uniform even when he’s at home. Spends dinner smoking cigars and bloviating.

MA NOLAN/SOLITARY WOMAN (Female, mid 40s, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE’s mother. Sturdy and practical. Does her best to run a respectable household, despite her rowdy sons and irrational husband. Loves FRANCIE and wants to support her, but consistently prioritizes her husband and his dangerous temper.

FRANKIE/FIRST MAN/COLLEGIATE YOUTH (Male, 18+ to play 15, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE'S youngest brother. An awkward and overgrown 15-year-old. Desperate to quit school and start his life. Can’t resist laughing in the face of his perennially angry father.

JOHNNY/SECOND MAN (Male, 18+ to play 16, Any Ethnicity) FRANCIE'S younger brother. An awkward and overgrown sixteen-year-old. Dreams of leaving school to become a fireman. As the slightly older brother, Johnny sets the tone for how the boys treat their sister: with childlike disrespect and name-calling.

LEONARD KRESS, SR. (Male, 50s, Any Ethnicity) Owner of Kress’ Dime Stores, father to LEONARD JR., and father-in-law to FRANCIE. Tall and strongly built. An intimidating presence, but ultimately, the first person to truly recognize and celebrate FRANCIE’s newfound strength.

PLEASE NOTE: Mint Theater Company is a member of the Off-Broadway League, and we join with Actors Equity Association and other league members in embracing the commitment to Diverse and Inclusive Casting as expressed in the latest collectively bargained agreement:

It is the desire of the parties that employment for Actors shall continue to reflect a multi-racial society that also includes Actors with disabilities. Toward that end, Actors' Equity Association and the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers will continue to encourage to the best of their abilities a flexible and imaginative casting policy which is called Diverse and Inclusive casting.

Diverse and Inclusive casting is for the purpose of increasing employment for Actors of color, women, seniors, and Actors with disabilities and is for the casting of the aforementioned Actors in roles where race, age, ethnicity, sex or the presence or absence of a disability is not absolutely essential to the play or the character's development. To this end, the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers shall expand the dissemination of audition and hiring notices in a manner that assists in the recruitment of actors and stage managers from groups that have been historically excluded from the theater industry.

It is also the intention of the parties that in furtherance of this policy, with due regard for the requirements of and suitability for employment, and with the understanding that there can be no interference with the contractual rights or artistic discretion of the Playwright, Director or Choreographer, the Producer shall endeavor to engage Actors of color, women, seniors and Actors with disabilities.
