by Stephen Thorne

1st Rehearsal: 9/18/12. Runs: 10/17 – 11/25/12 , in The Head Theater

Seeking:

VIRGINIA (20-25)-- Poe‘s dead wife. She was very young when she died. In death she is something different. As Poe’s muse, Virginia is ever eager to please. She is driven by an inquisitive and trusting nature, which compels her to see her husband as the apple of her eye even when she questions his words and challenges his actions. Virginia may be demure, but she is never weak.

VALDEMAR (late 20s-early 40s)—A skilled scientist, Valdemar has a touch of the exotic. She also may have a touch of a French accent. Valdemar is a creature of the nineteenth century; a powerful intellectual who joins her science with a deep curiosity about the mystical unknown. Those around her may question her ideas, but she refuses to back down—she brooks no nonsense from herself or anyone else.

DICKENS (a person of some age. 30s and up)—A version of the famous English writer. Dickens is the author we know—curious, thoughtful, powerful, bold—but this is also Dickens with a difference. Here he is Poe’s closest confidant and an intimate friend. As a provocative sparring partner, Dickens is truly Poe’s intellectual (and literary) match.

MORAN (30s-40s)—Doctor Moran is Poe’s attending physician. A comic force, he is also able to be serious when necessary. Moran likes to steer the ship, and he doesn’t mind using his powerful presence to get his way. Like a stern nanny, he compels those around him to fall in line, however much they may want to resist.
