Nina Simone: Four Women

NINA SIMONE (30) African American: A woman of dark skin and temperament. A symbol of resistance and rebellion. Complexity is her complexion and resistance and rebellion her anthem. An excellent singer and piano player. She lives hard and loves the same. She should possess the attributes of a modern-day prophet.
SARAH (40s) African American: A dark skin woman who bears the signs of a rough life of working her whole life for volatile white folks. She doesn’t sing the blues, but has lived it.
SEPHRONIA (30s-40s) African American: A soft, vulnerable woman with yellow skin, who has suffered a violent childhood. She’s joined the Civil Rights Movement hoping this will make her black enough to be accepted.
SWEET THING (Late 20s) African American: An enticing woman, whose skin is tan. She’s lived on the streets for quite some time and been in and out of trouble most of her life.
SAM WAYMON (20s) Nina’s younger brother. Plays piano, Hammond B-3 Organ, and tambourine. Stays out of her way.

Romeo – 20s/early 30s. (actor can be older but must read young) Male. Any ethnicity. Son of Montague and Lady Montague. Middle-class family. Handsome, intelligent, sensitive. Impulsive and immature, but his idealism and passion make him extremely likable character. Affectionate, devoted. Must be superb with text and thought. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
Prince – Any age. Any gender. Any ethnicity. Prince of Verona. A relative of Mercutio and Paris. Holds the seat of power in Verona and is concerned with maintaining public peace at all costs.
Montague – 50s. Male. Any ethnicity. Patriarch of the Montague family. Romeo’s father. Bitter rival to Capulet.
Capulet – 50s/60s. Male. Any ethnicity. Patriarch of Capulet family, father of Juliet, husband to Lady Capulet, and enemy for unexplained reason to Montague. Deeply loves his daughter but doesn’t understand her as a person. Prudent, commands respect and propriety; flies into rage easily when disrespected.
Mercutio – 20s/early 30s. Male. Any ethnicity. Friend to Romeo. Imaginative, full of wit. Brooding satirist. Sexual being. Quickly becomes hotheaded. Hates pretension. Must be superb with text and thought. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
Benvolio – 20s. Male. Any ethnicity. Montague’s nephew and Romeo’s cousin and thoughtful friend. Genuine. Makes every effort to diffuse tension and help Romeo. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
Tybalt – 20s/30s. Male. Any ethnicity. Juliet’s cousin on her mother’s side. Vain, pretentious. Aggressive, violent, quick to anger. Prideful. Must be superb with text and thought. Excellent fighter. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
Friar Lawrence – 50s/60s. Male. Any ethnicity. A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded, a proponent of moderation. Always has a plan. Believes his secret decision to marry Romeo and Juliet will heal the familial division and bring peace to the community.
Old Man/Friar John – 60s/70s. Male. Any ethnicity. An older friar.
Gregory – 20s. Male. Any ethnicity. Servants of the Capulet family. Hate the Montagues. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.

Naïve child who has thought little about love but grows up quickly when she falls in love with Romeo. A girl with little freedom but much courage. Views love as idealistic and intense. Must be superb with heightened text and thought.
Lady Capulet – 40s. Female. Any ethnicity. Juliet’s mother; wife to Capulet. She married young and became a mother young. Ineffectual mother. Lacks the ability to provide moral support to her daughter.
Lady Montague – 40s/50s. Female. Any ethnicity. Romeo’s mother. Montague’s wife. Carries great guilt after Romeo is exciled. Dies of grief.
Nurse – 40s. Female. Any ethnicity. Juliet’s nurse who breast-fed her when she was a baby. A bit vulgar, long-winded, and sentimental. Faithful confidante to Juliet. Views love as earthy and sexual.
