BREAKDOWN
BEVERLY POWERS:
(African American, 50s) Beverly is a high school dropout at the age of 16 who joined the workforce of a textile mill that was the center of the small, fictional town of Hawboro in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. She was later fired from her duties in the weave room of the mill in the early 80s for attempting to establish a union. She later earned a GED, went to college, and now teaches 4th grade at the local elementary school. Beverly has seen the days of segregation and Jim Crow and has seen the effects of it in modern society. She is intelligent, hardworking, does spoken word and is never afraid to speak up about the things she believes in. She is tenacious, outspoken and not afraid of a fight. Beverly auditions for a play that will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the town as it delves into its murky and mysterious history.
ADDIE HARGRAVE:
(African American, early 20s) Addie is the stage manager of the play celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the fictional town of Hawboro, and is a theatre major at the local university. Addie discovers that her family, like the town, has a long and storied history and that these two histories may be more connected than anyone thought. Originally from Cary, North Carolina, Addie is punctual, polite, focused and is very engaged in the conversations surrounding the play and becomes increasingly politically active as the process progresses. She has a deep intuitive nature and leads quietly off the strength of her convictions.
