Breakdown
Play Description - Winner of four Tony awards, the iconic story of the struggle of an African-American family, who confront the evil of unending prejudice which crushes their dreams, but leaves them unbowed and facing the future with courage and hope.
Male Roles
Walter Lee Younger – African-American male…late 20s, the protagonist, energetic dreamer, full of hope and despair. Wants to raise his family out of poverty…frustrated by his lack of know how.
Travis Younger – African American male, 8-12 years old, energetic but often sad because of all the family’s concerns.
Joseph Asagai – African male, 20s, from Nigeria, college student in love with Beneatha.
George Murchison – African American male, 20s, wealthy college student, likes Beneatha.
Mr. Karl Lindner - White male, 40ish, somewhat diplomatic, wants to stop Younger family from moving into his white neighborhood.
Bobo – African American male, 30s. Walter’s friend and ''business'' partner, somewhat shady.
Female Roles
Beneatha Younger - African American female…20 years old, college student, Walter’s sister and often his antagonist, intellectual/artist…wants to be a doctor and save the world.
Lena Younger (''Mama'') – African American female – late 50s-mid 60s. Family matriarch, strong, caring, fiercely loyal to her beliefs and dreams, uneducated.
Ruth Younger – African American female – late 20s, Walter’s wife, loving mother and wife, but very weary from the burden that poverty adds to their daily life.
