BREAKDOWN

PRODUCTION NOTE: In this adaptation, Athens is inspired by the legacy and aesthetic values of the Harlem Renaissance and reflects a contemporary Black and Brown cultural melting pot with influences from all over the world. The characters may speak in one of the many accents you might hear in Harlem on any given day. Oberon, Titania, Puck and the are reflections of the African spiritual legacy scattered throughout the new world.

Though this adaption does not attempt to reconstruct one specific tradition within the world of the play it takes influences from the Yoruba faith and its adherence to a pantheon of dieties also known as Orishas, who are represented in the power of Oberon (Olurun), Titania (Yemanya), and Puck (Exu Elegba). The movements of the fairies draws from West African dance and the Afro-Brazilian artform, Capoeira Angola.

The “Athenians” look like contemporary youth and working class men and women of the Harlem. They are inspired by contemporary fashions, styles and sensibilities but they are also comfortable in a world with converging realities ancient and contemporary—spirit and living--city and nature--African and American.

SEEKING:

[OBERON/THESEUS] 50s-60s. Duke of Harlem/King of the Spirit world. As Duke, He has ascended power in his community by gaining respect on the nefarious streets as well as established himself in the mainstream world of business and politics. As Oberon, he is King of the spirit world; inspired by the Yoruba Orisha tradition. May have African or Caribbean accent but not required.
