A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder

The D’Ysquith Family: 30s – mid 50s. Must be an experienced and comedic actor who has a superb grasp on British farce. Physical comedy and stamina is a necessity. Does not necessarily need to be a phenomenal singer, but must be able to carry a musical comedy without any hesitation. Plays a full range of characters from the same family, each of them an intrinsic “English type.” THIS ROLE IS CAST. Will still see performers for back-up.

Monty Navarro: Mid 20s – 30s. Handsome and effortlessly charming, clever and charismatic, vulnerable and endearing, with a highly developed appreciation for life’s ironies. Monty drives the story; must be able to command attention. While he is intent on killing off the entire family tree, he must have a winning charm that would garner anybody’s trust. High baritone with a strong top; solid low A to high A.

Sibella Hallward: 20s – mid 30s. Sexy, flirtatious, narcissistic, willful, calculating, and irresistible. She is a social climber but also truly loves Monty, and in the end would do anything to protect him. Tremendous wit and high style. Strong mover. Character mezzo, low F# to high A.

Phoebe D’Ysquith: Early 20s – early 30s. Beautiful, virtuous, forthright, romantic, comically earnest, with a backbone of steel. Must have a sense of irony and humor, in addition to a youthful innocence behind her sophistication. Very flexible and agile. Coloratura soprano, B below middle C to a high sustained C# with an optional high Eb.

Woman #1: 30s – 50s. Plays MISS SHINGLE, a Cockney housekeeper/governess who has served a wealthy, titled family for 30 years. Storytelling is paramount for her role. Also plays TOUR GUIDE, as well as PUB OWNER’S WIFE, MRS. PEBWORTH, 3RD NEWSBOY. Mezzo-soprano, G to high A. OFFER PENDING FOR THIS ROLE.

Woman #2: 30s – late 40s. Plays LADY EUGENIA, an unhappily married countess. Comically overbearing and mean spirited at times. Must be highly adept at the biting quip with a withering glare. Also plays MISS HETHERINGTON, and 4TH NEWSBOY. Low F# to high A. OFFER PENDING FOR THIS ROLE.

Woman #3: Mid 20s – mid 30s. Plays MISS BARLEY, an alluring artist model. Also plays SIBELLA’S MAID, HYACINTH COLLEAGUE, PHOEBE’S MAID, HILDA. G to high C.

Man #1: 20s – mid 30s. Appealing and attractive. Plays TOM COPLEY (aka FARMER), as well as 2ND CLERK, HYACINTH COLLEAGUE, 2ND NEWSBOY, ACTOR, DR. PETTIBONE, and GUARD. High baritone with a strong top; solid low A to high A. THIS ROLE IS CAST. Will still see performers for back-up.

Man #2: Early 30s – 40s. A versatile and appealing character man. Plays DETECTIVE PINCKEY. Also plays 1ST CLERK, PUB OWNER, MR. CROSS, 1ST NEWSBOY, 1ST ACTOR, and PHYSICIAN. Bass, low C to high G#.

Man #3: Mid 20s – 40s. A character man. Plays THE MAGISTRATE, as well as MR. GOODSALL, ACTOR, and MR. GORBY. True tenor. B flat to high B flat.

ELF

Director/Choreographer: TBD

Rehearsal: November 4th, 2019

Opens: November 30th, 2019

Closes: December 21st, 2019

BUDDY: (Male, 20-30) Tenor to G, Lead. Funny, and warm with an infectious personality; has been raised as one of Santa's elves and has the innocence of a child; has outrageous enthusiasm for everything he sees and does but it is very genuine. Comedian with great subtle timing and must be a very strong mover with a great sense of physical comedy.

JOVIE: (Female, 20-30) Mezzo with strong Belt to D Flat, Lead. Comedic, appealing, and relatable New Yorker that doesn’t have much Christmas spirit until meeting Buddy.

WALTER HOBBS: (Male, 45-55) Bari-tenor, Lead. Upscale successful businessman who has become cold and distant with his family until Buddy enters their life. Workaholic with little time left for enjoying life or appreciating simple things.

EMILY HOBBS: (Female, 40-50) Mezzo with a strong belt up to a C, Supporting. Walter’s wife and Michael’s mother. At first overwhelmed by Buddy, but soon embraces him as part of the family.

DEB: (Female, 30 to 45) a very strong character singer with an excellent belt. Supporting. Funny secretary at Walter’s office, full of character and sharp wit. Must be a strong mover.

MR. GREENWAY: (Male, 50-60) Supporting. Strong singer with great comic timing. Shrewd businessman.

SANTA: (Male, 50 to 60) Strong Singer, Supporting. Jolly, warm, funny; a down to earth blue-collar type. Lovable.

STORE MANAGER: (Male, 30 to 50) Supporting. Strong singer with excellent comedic timing. Funny, physically large, full of character, lots of attitude, sassy and spirited.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE: (Female, 20s to 40s) To play various roles including store/office workers & elves. Must have an excellent sense of humor and a commitment to collaborate in an ensemble. Strong Singer/Dancers. (Various Vocal Ranges) Ensemble will cover lead roles.

MALE ENSEMBLE: (Male, 20s to 40s) To play various roles including store/office workers & elves. Must have an excellent sense of humor and a commitment to collaborate in an ensemble. Strong Singer/Dancers. (Various Vocal Ranges) Ensemble will cover lead roles.
