BREAKDOWN

Broadway's big, fat roman musical is back, with a new spin on Pulitzer Prize-winner Stephen Sondheim's raucous comedy that pays tribute to the original funny man himself, Plautus. Ancient Rome is turned on its ear in this bawdy romp of mistaken identity and twisting plots, where secrets hide behind every toga.

Actively seeking a cast of diverse ethnicities. Bonus: actors who also play an instrument: guitar, wind, brass, percussion, strings.

SENEX: MALE, AGE: 45-65, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top G4 – bottom B2) An older man, but one still attracted to wine, women, and song; the perennially henpecked husband; must be able to sing and move, and have great comic timing.

DOMINA: FEMALE (or Male as Woman), AGE: 45-55, MEZZO-SOPRANO (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom B3) Strong, overbearing wife to Senex. A fiery broad who was once a beauty, but she does not realize that time has since passed. Must be able to sing and move, and have great comic timing.

HYSTERIUM: MALE, AGE: 35-45 BARITONE, (Vocal Range: top G5 – bottom D4) Slave to Senex and Domina - frantic and frenetic, tightly wound and paranoid. Pseudolus cons him into helping him in his plots, including dressing Hysterium up as the corpse of Philia. He is the “Ethel Mertz” to Pseudolus’ “Lucy Ricardo.” Must be able to sing and move, and have great comic timing.

PSEUDOLUS: MALE, AGE: 35-50, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top A4 – bottom A2) Slave to Hero - sly, conniving, and willing to do anything for his freedom. A larger than life guide through this farcical romp. A puppet master and leader of what is posed as a band of merry actors. Must be able to sing and move, and have great comic timing.

HERO: MALE, AGE: 18-25, TENOR (Vocal Range: top G4 – bottom B2) The handsome young Roman son of Senex and Domina, Hero is a lovesick juvenile who schemes with Pseudolus how he can win the hand (and body) of Philia – practical, privileged, romantic; must sing.

LYCUS/ERRONIUS: MALE, AGE: 45-75, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom A3) To play Lycus and Erronius. Lycus is the owner of the brothel - snaky, slimy, lecherous procurer of courtesans; Erronius is the befuddled old father to his long lost children partially blind and always confused. Must sing (as Lycus) and have excellent comic timing.

PHILIA: FEMALE, AGE: 18-25, SOPRANO A virginal girl. An archetypal ingénue. She’s beautiful and young, devoted, pretty - but not by any means stupid.

MILES GLORIOSUS: MALE, late 20s-30, BASS (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom B3) A handsome Roman warrior. Manly and Boastful. Vain and proud and pompous. Must be able to sing and move, have great command, strength and comic timing.

COURTESANS: FEMALE, AGE: 25-40. Various Vocal Ranges. A trio of women to act as a Greek chorus of sorts. A combination of 3 women to play the sexy and smart Gymnasia (a beautiful Amazon of a woman), Tintinabula, Panacea, Vibrata, The Geminae, Roman soldiers and others; all three dynamic actors who can sing, dance, have a great grasp of physical comedy, and willing to do a bit of a burlesque bump and grind (no nudity).
