BREAKDOWN

A FINAL TOAST

SYNOPSIS: This deep exploration of two mother-daughter relationships follows a Jewish family and Irish family in New York, where circumstances reveal discoveries as well as the unexpected interconnectedness of their lives as the mothers approach the need for assisted living. The alternately fragile and persistent qualities of memory are explored as the tale unfolds and daughters confront mothers, and mothers confront daughters about the meaning of their lives and choices. The cast includes two mature Mother-Daughter relationships as described below. Heritage issues of the families are important to the playing of the roles, but all roles are open to any actor who chooses to audition.

SEEKING:

ELLA:

Jewish woman (age late 40’s/early 50’s); dark unruly hair, prominent features. Brash demeanor hiding sadness and anxiety.

BLANCHE: Ella’s mother (age early/mid 80s), upper middle class; secular New York Jewish. Attractive and well-kept; in earlier scenes this means hair and make-up are impeccable.

ALICE: Professional home organizer (age mid 40s); white, attractive in a girl-next-door way.

CAROL: Alice’s mother; white (age late 70s), middle-class. A practical and modest in dress and demeanor.
