BREAKDOWN

In 1879, Nora Helmer walked out the door, leaving her husband and children and societal constraints behind her, instantly propelling world drama into the modern age. Now, 15 years later, there is a knock at that same door as the squirrel returns to her cage with an incredibly awkward favor to ask. In this bitingly funny and fascinating sequel to Ibsen’s revolutionary masterpiece, sparks fly and the past and present collide in a taut theatrical showdown. Behind every door is a possibility, and behind every ending is a new beginning.

Nora – Female. 40s. Estranged wife of Torvald, mother of three. Left her family 15 years ago after living out the ideal of the 19th-century wife. She is now an author who takes great pride her success and autonomy.

Torvald – Male 50s-60s. Estranged husband of Nora, father of three. On the surface, he is measured and reserved. He feels quite deeply, but is unsure of how to express it.

Anne Marie – Female. 60s. The family nanny who has continued to work in the house, raising Nora and Torvald’s children as her own. She tries to keep the waters calm for everyone’s sanity, but struggles with her fundamental disagreements with Nora’s choices. She is practical, shrewd, slightly worn down, quick-witted, tough, funny.

Emmy – Female. 20s. Nora and Torvald’s daughter. She’s perfectly well-adjusted.
