Character Breakdown:
Ebenezer Scrooge
[CAST] -- (male, 50s - 60s, open ethnicity) Ebenezer Scrooge is the miserly owner of a counting house. He has lived a selfish life and has isolated himself from everyone and everything. He is constantly angry by years of having his way and his old age has made it worse. While he finds himself funny, his humor is usually at the expense of other people’s feelings and tragedies. Scrooge is excitable, quick to judgment, strong willed, and powered by his greed. His stubbornness is only matched by his need to control those around him. However, somewhere in his dark soul lies the ability to feel love and joy if he could only look deep enough. He speaks with a standard British dialect.
The Ghost of Christmas Present
(also plays Mrs. Fezziwig and Ensemble) -- (female, 30s-50s, open ethnicity, Mezzo Soprano) The Ghost of Christmas Present is the life of the party and has a joyous nature. She is friendly, strong, compassionate, intelligent, and faithful. She loves playing a good joke, particularly on Scrooge. However, when pushed she can be demanding and forceful. She genuinely cares about the welfare of others and hopes to help them to see the error of their ways. She speaks with a standard British dialect and must be able to sing a big ballad. Must dance in a lively English country dance as Mrs. Fezziwig. Must not be afraid of heights, as Present is played in a tall rolling steel frame representing the bottom of her dress.
Beggar Woman
[CAST] -- (female, 40s - 50s, open ethnicity) The Beggar Woman narrates the story of Scrooge and his fantastical one night journey. She lives inside and outside the story, effortlessly weaving herself throughout the action. She is accompanied by a group of beggar children who she protects and loves. She is mystical, bold, passionate, thoughtful, encouraging, and loving. Despite her low standing in the world, she displays more compassion and strength than the affluent. There is power and dignity in her nature that commands respect from those around her. She speaks with a Cockney dialect.
Bob Cratchit
(also plays Villager and Ensemble) – (male, 30 – 40s, open ethnicity) Bob Cratchit is a clerk at Scrooge’s counting house and is paid very little. A diligent employee, he maintains a good face and allows Scrooge to take out his anger on him. He is a devoted husband and father and everything he does is for them. Barely being able to provide for them, it is his love and guidance that keeps them together. He is kind, hardworking, generous, resilient, thoughtful, and possesses a firm love for his fellow man. Bob sees the bright side of things and even in the darkest times his spirit is joyful. He speaks with a Cockney dialect and must have some singing ability.
Jacob Marley
(also plays Old Joe and Ensemble) -- (male, 50 – 60s, open ethnicity) Jacob Marley was Scrooge’s partner before his death and like Scrooge he was selfish and miserly. However, in death he has seen the error of his ways and is paying for his sins. Shackled by the chains he created in life, he is determined to change the path of Scrooge. He is forceful, intimidating, pained, and in tremendous agony. There is a desperation that runs through his being and his heart is filled with grief and concern for his friend. He speaks with a standard British dialect and must have some singing ability. Must be under 6 feet.
Mr. Fezziwig
[ROLE CAST] (also plays Businessman, Villager, and Ensemble) -- (male, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) Mr. Fezziwig gave Scrooge his start as a young apprentice and was a father figure to him. A successful businessman, he created a workplace that was warm, inviting and nurturing to those that worked for him. He is loving, kind, compassionate, faithful and knows how to throw a fantastic party. His drive and integrity keeps the office open without needing to shout to get his way. A smile and a hand shake are his tools for a successful work place. He cares deeply for Scrooge and wants nothing but the best for him. He speaks with a standard British dialect and must have some singing ability. Must dance in a lively English country dance.
The Ghost of Christmas Past
(also plays Hortence and Ensemble) – early 20s, Open Ethnicity. The Ghost of Christmas Past is a strong-willed, powerful, and feisty spirit, who is relentless in her pursuit of Scrooge’s reclamation. She is young, beautiful, proud, and impetuous. However, she also has a soft heart for children and delights in the joy of others. She has both a bright tinkling laugh and immense magical powers. In contrast, Hortence is a flirtatious young Victorian woman, set on winning Topper’s heart. She is slightly socially awkward, but is also determined, funny, and petulant. Although not the brightest of ladies, games bring out her competitive spirit. Both characters speak with a standard British dialect and must be able to sing.
Belle
(also plays Charitable Woman, Edwina, and Ensemble) – early 20s, Open Ethnicity. Belle is an open-hearted, generous soul, who is deeply in love with Scrooge. As Scrooge begins to put more emphasis on monetary gain instead their relationship, she makes a concerted and emotional plea for him to change his path. She releases him from their engagement with deep pain, love, and regret. She is intelligent, kind, and strong. In contrast, Edwina is a vivacious and delightfully funny young woman with an infectious laugh. She is deeply in love with Fred and enjoys being the hostess their parties, which feature gossip, flirtation, and games. The Charitable Woman is a committed champion of human rights and enthusiastically raises money for the poor at Christmas. She is determined, righteous, unafraid of conflict, and an eternal optimist. She easily moves from tactic to tactic to achieve her goals. Characters speak with a standard British dialect or a Cockney dialect. Actor must have some singing ability and the ability to dance a short English country dance.
Mrs. Cratchit
(and Ensemble) – late 20s - 30s, Open Ethnicity. Mrs. Cratchit deeply loves her family and husband. She is generous, kind, patient, and warm-hearted, even when her small children misbehave. She makes chores into games and is not above playing jokes on her husband. She worries about providing the best for her family and is constantly attuned to Tiny Tim’s failing health. Her quiet faith and positive outlook give her support and strength during her family’s struggles. Although she resents Scrooge’s stinginess and his mistreatment of Bob Cratichit, she can find it in her heart to show Scrooge a small gesture of good will in honor of Christmas, a holiday that is dear to her heart. After Tim’s death, she tries desperately to put on a brave face for her children, but ultimately crumbles when faced with the journey to Tim’s grave and takes comfort in her husband’s quiet strength. She speaks with a Cockney dialect and must have some singing and dancing ability.
Topper
(also plays Dick Wilkins, Businessman, and Ensemble) – 20s-30s, Open Ethnicity. Topper is a handsome young gentleman, who tries to avoid Hortence’s overtures at Fred’s Christmas party. Topper can be a bit stodgy and serious, but gets excited by games and Christmas cheer. As Fred’s best friend, he is frustrated and offended by Scrooge’s treatment of Fred and Edwina. The youthful and excitable life of the party, Dick Wilkins was Scrooge’s best friend when they were apprentices together under the guidance of Mr. Fezziwig. As an adult, Dick is disappointed by Scrooge’s choices and has married Belle, Scrooge’s former fiancé. He judges Scrooge harshly and swiftly. All characters speak with a standard British dialect and must have some singing ability.
Charitable Man
(also plays Young Husband and Ensemble) – 20s-30s, Open Ethnicity. The Charitable Man is a strong advocate for the rights of the poor and is skilled in his sales pitch. He’s proud, determined, and a bit pompous. He tries a variety of tactics to get what he needs from Scrooge and other recalcitrant donors. He loves children and has an irrepressibly sunny outlook. The Young Husband is in serious financial trouble and has been weighted down by his attempts to find a solution to his troubles. He is amazed and shocked to discover that he will have extra time to pay his debts, thanks to the death of his creditor. He deeply loves his wife and takes perverse joy in telling her that they are in the clear. Actor must have facility with both a standard British dialect and Cockney. Must have some singing ability.
Fred
(also plays Young Scrooge, Villager, and Ensemble) 20s-30s, Caucasian. Fred is a handsome, engaging young man with a deep love and enthusiasm for Christmas. He has a gift for public speaking and for inspiring others to believe in his views. He loves his uncle Scrooge, despite Scrooge’s frequent harsh rejections of his friendship. Fred is fun-loving, forgiving, endearing, and charming. He enjoys teasing his wife and playing games. Young Scrooge is a serious-minded young man with deep ambition. He nervously and tenderly proposes marriage to Belle in front of their friends at Fezziwig’s Christmas party. But eventually, despite his love for Belle, he comes to value money above all else and regrets their engagement. All characters speak with a standard British dialect and must have some singing ability.
