A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Adapted from: Charles Dickens and many a British folk carol.
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR: This Christmas Carol imagines a group of dystopian travelers who convert a found space to Dickension England through the power of play and object transformation. Making up a kind chorus, the cast will devise physical theater sequences to move us from place to place and inspire the Scrooges among us to celebrate the possibility of transformation.
A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT: We are all inside Scrooge’s world today: a time of rampant grief and resentment turned into greed and fear. How do we find our hearts again? How do we become generous again? This adaptation offer the start of a path in a more forgiving direction through an approach that treasures the spirit and skill of actors, the impulse to play, to reach for something yet to be made or discovered, and to invite others into their imagination. Through collaborative storytelling and song, I hope this play visits its audience much as the Spirits visit Scrooge: with care, buoyancy, and much determination.
Note: Actors who sing are strongly encouraged to submit.
[BOB CRATCHIT AND OTHERS] 30s - 50s, BIPOC, he/him. Kind hearted, nervous, hard working. Doubles as Young Marley.
[FRED AND OTHERS] 20s - 30s, BIPOC, he/him. Ebullient, playful, puppy dog. Doubles as Young Scrooge.
[EMILY CRATCHIT AND OTHERS] Mid 30s - Late 40s, any ethnicity, she/her. AKA Mrs. Cratchit. Rebellious, eloquent, warm. Strong soul rock singing voice.
[GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST/KIND CHORUS LEADER AND OTHERS] - Any age, any ethnicity, any gender. Mischievous, child-like, mercurial. Strong multi-octave folk-pop singing voice (think Joni Mitchell).
[BELLE AND OTHERS] 20s - Early 30s, BIPOC, she/her. Wickedly clever, warm, doesn't suffer fools. Strong musical theatre style singing voice.
[GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT AND OTHERS] Any age and ageless, BIPOC, any gender. Jovial, wise, full of joy and abundance. Has the power to show people the truth. Has the humor to not take that power too seriously. Boisterous, larger than life, with a fun wry grit in both personality and singing style. Rock, blues, gospel voice. Think James Earl Jones meets Bonnie Raitt.
