Breakdown

Peggy Sawyer:
very early 20s, fresh off the bus from Allentown, PA, full of hope, dreams, innocence, spirit, and most important, genuine talent, appealing, fresh as paint, adorable, the all-American ideal, must be a superb tapper and sing well;

Dorothy Brock:
mid-40s to mid-50s, about to age any minute, a Broadway star, Pretty Lady is her return to Broadway after a 10-year absence, there's a touch of well-masked desperation in her demeanor, grand, imperious, selfish, must have glamour, sing well, and move with grace;

Maggie Jones:
45-60, co-author of Pretty Lady, witty, no-nonsense dame, a cross between Betty Comden, Kay Thompson, and Rose Marie, has a tart mouth and a big warm heart, a character comedienne, strong Broadway belt and must move well;

Anytime Annie:
mid- to late 20s, cross between Joan Blondell and Ginger Rogers in the film 42nd Street, experienced chorus girl, she knows the ropes, nobody's fool, quick-witted and smart-mouthed, tall, strapping girl, superb tapper and strong Broadway belt;

Julian Marsh:
late 30s-50s, Broadway director, powerful presence, when he enters a room you can cut the tension in the air with a knife, the words can't and no do not exist in his language of show business, he eats, drinks, and lives the show, powerful, commanding, sexy, handsome, intelligent, and knowing, can handle any situation with wit, strength, and charm, a svengali, ruthless, but deep down he has a caring heart, baritone;

Billy Lawlor:
mid-20s to early 30s, classic juvenile, clean-cut good looks, warm, charming, personable, everybody's best friend, an okay guy, someone you can take home to mother, protects Peggy and looks out for her but would love to date her as well, superb tapper and first rate legit Broadway tenor;

Bert Barry:
45-60, co-author of Pretty Lady, cross between Adolph Green, Morry Amsterdam, and Oscar Levant, a funny witty guy who loves his work, superb comic, character singer, must move well;

Andy Lee:
late 20s to late 30s, hard-working dance director of Pretty Lady, has worked with Julian many times, a genuine pro, major tap dancer;

Pat Denning:
mid- to late 40s, actor down on his luck, once very handsome, just beginning to go to sod, a good guy in a bad situation, trying desperately to keep his love affair with Dorothy Brock alive, was once Dorothy's vaudeville partner and lover, covers Julian Marsh, baritone;

Abner Dillon:
60s, bankrolling Pretty Lady, only because of his infatuation with Dorothy Brock, he is her current sugar daddy, heavy-set, ridiculous, pompous, and not very bright
