Dark Circles Announces 2018-19 Season

Dallas' Dark Circles Contemporary Dance has announced its 2018-19 Season. The company will produce seven world premieres, including a brand-new evening-length creation by Founder and Artistic Director Joshua L. Peugh, as well as commissioned works by highly sought-after and emerging choreographers Sidra Bell, Mark Caserta, Eoghan Dillon, and Mikey Morado.

The company celebrates the opening of its 2018-19 Season in the U.S.A. with a brand-new immersive evening-length creation by international award-winning choreographer and founder of Dark Circles Joshua L. Peugh based on the story "The History of Aladdin, or The Wonderful Lamp."

Aladdin, Habibi is a meditation on American rhetoric regarding the Middle East and the stereotypes associated with Middle Eastern races and cultures. The new work also explores how time and imagination have transformed the original tale of Aladdin and his magical lamp. The work touches on women's rights, anti-Semitism, violence, public pressure, domestic politics, and foreign policy. A brand-new score for the work has been commissioned from composer and SMU Meadows School of the Arts alumnus Brandon Carson and will be performed live. The production will feature a lighting design by Roma Flowers. Susan Austin will provide the costume design. Performance details to follow.

In the new year, Dark Circles (who is being featured as WaterTower Theatre's Guest Company in Residence) moves to Addison Theatre Centre-the company's new home theatre for 2019-for a Winter Series featuring three world premieres centering on gay identity in America. The new creations focus on coming out, gender, desire, relationships, sex, and other timely issues. Dark Circles has commissioned budding queer choreographers Mark Caserta, Eoghan Dillon, and Mikey Morado for the program. A new creation by Peugh closes the evening. Performances will run January 24 - 27, 2019.

Rounding out the season, the company presents its Spring Series featuring the commission of a world premiere by the internationally praised choreographer Sidra Bell. Two other new works are slated for this series and will be announced at a later date. Performances will run March 22 - 24, 2019.
