In honor of the life of one of Broadway’s most innovative musical geniuses, Stephen Sondheim, Short North Stage reimagines this audience favorite. Exploring the intersection of fairy tales and life beyond “Happily Ever After,” this complex and beautiful examination of human behavior is brought to life with Sondheim’s witty lyrics and James Lapine’s innovative storytelling. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. That journey leads all the characters into places they never imagined. With so many relevant themes we are reminded that “Children Will Listen” and that “No One is Alone.”
