The play is based on the true story of a “model of the times”—HUANG Dafa, one of the sixth national moral exemplars. Water shortages have troubled the villagers of Tuanjie Village in Guizhou Province that is ringed on four sides by lofty mountains and high ranges for decades. The village secretary HUANG is determined to dig a ditch to change the status quo, but he is opposed by nearly all the villagers, who have lost confidence in ditching owing to the failure in trenching in the 1960s. Nevertheless, HUANG doesn’t give up. He goes through all kinds of hardships, re-challenging the cliff with villagers. They gouge out a 9,400-meter-long Sky Stream that stretches across three villages.
