How to be a Human, or at least Try
A Collection of Short Plays and Monologues by Bekah Brunstetter

June 19-23, 2019 Visiting Artist Series @ NC Stage Company, Asheville, NC

As part of their Visiting Artists Series, NC Stage will soon be hosting the world-premiere production of How to be a Human, or at least Try: A Collection of Short Plays and Monologues by Bekah Brunstetter.

Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Brunstetter is a critically-acclaimed playwright (The Cake, The Notebook), Emmy nominated television writer (This is Us), and Oprah-approved screenplay author (The Secret). How to be a Human, or at least Try is produced by Erin McCarson and Josephine Thomas. Working closely with Brunstetter, a talented group of actors in Asheville, NC are honored to present the first-ever performances of this production. This event is a victory for the Asheville theater scene, as Brunstetter's work is often first staged in New York or other large regional theaters.

This production features both published and unpublished short plays and monologues. How to be a Human, or at least Try weaves themes of love, kindness, loneliness, and hurt, driving forces in the human desire for connection. It's a close up look at the heartbreaking longing to be seen, and what it means when you actually are seen. In this playful and poignant series of vignettes, Brunstetter creates characters who are real and true and human and vulnerable and funny. Her words are universal. She helps the audience to both understand and feel understood. She finds magic in the every day and shines light in even the darkest, most mundane corners of life.

The collaborative cast bringing Brunstetter's vision to life includes Erin McCarson, Josephine Thomas, Samantha LeBrocq, Allen Law, Anna Denson, Pam Elder, and Daniel Moore. In addition to acting, members of the cast are also lending their expertise to directing and designing.

How to be a Human or at least Try: A Collection of Short Plays and Monologues by Bekah Brunstetter will show at NC Stage from June 19th-23rd. NC Stage is graciously providing the venue for this groundbreaking project, but every other aspect of the production is being crowdfunded by local donors and business sponsors.
