Hershey Area Playhouse Announces Director’s Choice Season for its Anniversary!
Hershey Area Playhouse is celebrating its 10th and 20th anniversaries simultaneously during the 2019 season! Hershey Area Playhouse will celebrate its 20th season in 2019, as well as its 10th season in its permanent home in the Playhouse Barn.
To celebrate its anniversary, the Artistic Committee is offering their entire season of Main Stage shows to Director’s Choice. All directors in the area will have the opportunity to present the plays and musicals they have wanted to direct. The committee will hear proposals in June and will select the 2019 season based on the presentations.
Directors must fill out a questionnaire regarding the show, or shows, they would like to present. Directors can fill out the following Google form to propose their shows. Directors are asked to fill out one form per show they wish to propose.
When proposing a show, a few criteria are to be kept in mind. Rating of the proposed shows should remain PG-13 as much as possible. When considering proposed shows, prospective directors will want to consider when they may wish to have the show performed. For the 2019 season, the following dates and the criteria of each time frame are as follows:
February 7-17, 2019: A play or small musical
April 4-14, 2019: A drama or comedy play
July 18-28, 2019- A big musical, including many roles.
October 3-13, 2019- A drama or comedy play. This play can also have a spooky theme for Halloween if the director so wishes.
December 5-15, 2019- A Christmas play or uncomplicated musical
December 19-22, 2019- A children’s one-act play
To prepare for the proposals, the following dates have been arranged with the Artistic Committee for prospective directors.
On Saturday, May 12, the Playhouse will hold an open house for directors that are both veterans and new to the Playhouse to visit and tour the Playhouse while enjoying refreshments and speak with the members of the Artistic Committee. The deadline to submit the questionnaire proposing a show is Friday, May 18.
Directors’ presentations of the shows they wish to have considered will be held Monday, June 4, and Tuesday, June 5, starting at 6:30 pm each evening. Directors will be contacted by a member of the Artistic Committee prior to these dates after questionnaires have been received to confirm a 15-minute time slot for directors to pitch their proposed show.
Decisions for the 2019 season will be made by the end of June, at which time the directors will be contacted and the 2019 season will be announced in preparations for Hershey Area Playhouse’s anniversary celebrations.
The Artistic Committee looks forward to seeing what shows past or new directors will bring forward for our anniversary season.
