Irondale Announces New Season Of Activism, Education And Exciting Theater In Brooklyn

Following a 35th Anniversary Season, marked by the generous support of Emmy Award winner and great American thinker Alan Alda, Irondale announces an expansive 2018-2019 season. Irondale kicks off its 36th season October 2, with the sixth cycle of its internationally recognized 9-week To Protect, Serve and Understand workshop series. Additional 18/19 highlights include: the premiere of Brecht in Exile Part 1: Galileo, executed as a 3-part series over the next 3 seasons; the second season of She Stands Alone, solo shows by and about woman; ART Buffet, a bi-monthly thematic performance series showcasing emerging artists; and Danny Rocco's Convention, an immersive recreation of the 1944 Democratic National Convention.

A home for the seasoned Irondale Ensemble, a classroom for the curious and bold, and a destination for national theater companies to develop and champion new works, Irondale will co-present M-34'sSalome, October 6-27, Oscar Wilde's most vulnerable work, and open its doors in January as a host venue of the HERE Prototype Festival's The Infinite Hotel-with an extended partnership of the work running from January 14-February 3.

Irondale will feature its headlining project, Brecht in Exile Part One: Galileo, in the spring, March 11-April 29. Regarded as one of German Bertolt Brecht's greatest masterpieces, the play follows legendary astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei in the later part of his life, and his struggle to prove the Copernican theory that the sun, not the Earth is the center of the universe. While these claims are pitted against the Catholic Church and the pope, the work is a portrait of the great scientist torn between scientific principals and his desire for the comfortable life that compliance and authority afford. Over the next two seasons, the ensemble will present two more plays Brecht wrote while in exile from Germany-Mother Courage and Good Person of Szechuan-to examine their similarities and current relevance.
