Germaul Barnes To Teach & Speak At International Association Of Blacks In Dance Conference

Germaul Barnes, a NY-based contemporary dance artist with a global approach to movement, will appear as a panelist and master educator at the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference & Festival in Dayton, OH, January 22-27, 2019. Barnes is a member of the IABD Next Generation Committee and will teach three master classes and serve on a panel with the Coalition for Diasporan Scholars Moving (CDSM) during the conference.

Germaul Barnes is a choreographer, director, master educator, scholar, and designer with a multifaceted career spanning more than thirty years in contemporary dance. Global in vision and influence, he is known for a bold, urgent, energetic movement style, steeped in spirituality and optimism. His work regularly reflects his deep knowledge of and interest in anthropology, dance of the African Diaspora, musicality, and social justice.

Barnes is a BESSIE Award-winning former dancer and current répétiteur for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; in 2019 he will stage D-Man In the Waters (1989) at Yale University and participate in the creation Jones's latest work The Deep Blue Sea (Working Title). Barnes's latest commission, a new work for Alabama Ballet, will premiere in April of 2019.

At the conference, Barnes will teach three signature master classes. He created JOY in 2002 - a unique high-energy contemporary class that invites dancers to experience Barnes's fusion of movement forms, merging modern dance and contemporary ballet with influences from masters like Bill T. Jones, Paul Taylor, and Katherine Dunham. Through class, dancers will explore self-empowerment, applied energy, efficiency, accuracy, and awareness of their bodies, all while claiming individual and collective JOY. This class is designed for Intermediate and Advanced dancers.

The International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) preserves and promotes dance by people of African ancestry or origin, and assists and increases opportunities for artists in advocacy, audience development, education, funding, networking, performance, philosophical dialogue, and touring. In marking 28 years of serving the Black Dance field, the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) will host its 31st Annual International Conference and Festival in Dayton, OH from January 22 - 27, 2019, in partnership with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. This conference marks the broadest gathering of Black Dance professionals in the US and Internationally, including agents, artistic directors, artists, choreographers, company managers, executive directors, historians, presenters, scholars, teachers, and many others. Over four days, participants will engage in professional opportunities including workshops and panel sessions, dialogues, performances, and classes.

His latest commission, a new work for Alabama Ballet, will premiere in April of 2019.

Barnes is a BESSIE Award-winning former dancer and current répétiteur for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. He is currently resident choreographer at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, curator for Contemporary Improvisation for Black Men, choreographer adviser for One Dance-UK's - Dance of the African Diaspora and Movement Research, and advisory board member and curator for the Thelma Hill Performance Arts Center.

Barnes is the choreographer of One Love: The Bob Marley Musical which premiered in 2015 at Center Stage in Baltimore, MD. He has created more than 50 works for his dance collective Viewsic Dance, presented on stages and by companies across the world including SummerStage, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, 92nd Street Y, ICA Boston, Movement Research at the Judson Church, the International Modern Dance Festival (Belarus), Ghana National Dance Company, International Dance Theatre Festival (Lublin, Poland), Friends of Tafo (London, England), Jasmyn Fyffe Dance (Toronto, Canada), and beyond. He has served on the faculty and as a guest choreographer for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Fordham BFA Program at The Ailey School, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive.

He has also worked with Katherine Dunham, Eleo Pomare, Pilobolus, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Group Motions Dance Company, Philadanco, Pacific Conservatory Theatre, and as a guest artist for numerous ballet and contemporary companies.
