Just watch the filmed version right now. You’ll never see a better performance than Donna and Marin. Even if you don’t like the show the acting craft, especially from Donna is amazing. Truly one of the greatest performances of all time in my books.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Passion to me was an agonizing bore, even thought it was only 90 minutes or so.  I will admit that I also thought that Pacific Overtures was also boring, if not as bad as Passion.  I love most of his other works, so I am definitely in awe of him overall.

PACIFIC OVERTURES is not your typical Broadway Musical...more of a theatre piece of Kabuki style theatre with music...and i thought the original Broadway production was superb. Every musical that Sondheim wrote was always different from his last show...this is especially true with this musical, following A Little Night Music...just my opinion...

I’m glad you think so. Sondheim has said he thought it strange people said he has a sound and he wouldn’t recognise that is because everything he did was different. Ok maybe by the time bounce/road show and here we are came around he started to repeat himself but he really was incredibly versatile.

I go back and watch Donna Murphy's "I Read" all the time. Just gorgeous.

The CSC revival of Passion was bit more satisfying than the OBC in '94, but man, that show is just a really tough sell for me. Some lovely musical passages can't mask over the woodenness of the central love story. Funny to think about Passion, having just finished watching BABY REINDEER, the Netflix miniseries that turned a disturbed stalker tale into absolutely riveting drama.

Is this wishful thinking? Or actual reality? Are these products in the works?

As the saying goes, if wishes were fishes…

I'm beginning to think (read 'hope'Next Sondheim? ) that CSC simply 'put a pin' in the Anyone Can Whistle revisal until next season since Rachel Bay Jones will be reprising her TV role in the Young Sheldon spin-off

Well, besides Gypsy," there's "Funny Thing..." just announced by Signature Theatre in Arlington, for next season. Loved their "Pacific Overtures" last season. Would love to see it come to NYC.

I think a revival of Pacific Overtures for the 50th anniversary in 2026 would be cool.

Thank you for posting this! I had no idea this was being produced in DC and It’s the only Sondheim that I’ve never seen. Happy to make my way to DC over the winter for this.  Loved Signature’s productions of Company and Sunday!
