During the days of Jim Crow laws and segregation, an African American’s travel in the South was extremely difficult. The Negro Motorist Green Book, published from 1936-1966, was a resource for travelers which identified safe places for African Americans to eat, purchase gas, spend the night, and access other services in Southern towns. The play, a work of historical fiction, explores the injustices faced during this critical period of U.S. history. It takes a fascinating twist as a Jewish concentration camp survivor encounters a salesman for The Green Book while passing through town on his way to honor the African American veteran who saved his life.
