As a consequence of hearing the word repeated, as a consequence of making it an almost otherworldly concept, you end up almost forgetting the perversity and the depth of its action on our societies. Financial crisis. Ever stronger economic pressure on workers, the loss of values and bearings, fanatic individualism, the question of identity which is solved by withdrawing into oneself... A society in crisis produces personal crises for members of that society, lost in the middle of the human ant-hills which our cities have become.

Antônio Araùjo and his Teatro da Vertigem (Theatre of Vertigo) has constructed his future creation at the Avignon Festival in 2014 and at the Théâtre National around this (broad) topic. A real event for Antônio Araùjo is a national treasure in Brazil and one of the most atypical and fascinating creators of our times. And it is a double "event" for in order to create this new show, Araùjo asked Bernardo Carvalho, a major figure in Brazilian literature, to write the words.

Obsessed by the scope of a theatre which is directly connected to people, the Vertigem usually goes outside of the theatre to spaces full of poetic force. Thus Araùjo has created shows in a church, a disused prison, a hospital or on the river Tietê which runs through Sao Paulo.

This will be the case once more in Brussels, a city truly at the heart of the dramatic process of this new show. Araùjo, Carvalho and the actors came to soak themselves in it, they filmed it, listened to it and sought out its deepest vibrations.

The two main characters in the show wander round Brussels, lost. The father lived there when he had to flee the dictatorship in his own country. He returns to accompany his daughter, an economist, who has to give a conference in Brussels. She hopes that this will provide the shock which will bring her father out of the total silence he has sunk into since the death of his wife. But both of them will get lost in this city which they no longer recognise. Not just physically: the inhabitants are also unrecognisable. How has politics been slowly taken over by fail-safe identical policies? How have points of reference and values so quickly crumbled away?

Deeply anchored in the concrete, Araujo's theatre is however intensely poetic, with a gentle strangeness in his approach.

And in addressing the question of the loss of reference points through the physical and mental journey of this pair of exiles, Araùjo creates a powerful sense of despair while closely touching close to all the questions which torment us.
