Bonnie Lynn Wagner has been a reader for as long as she can remember. Friends frequently come to her for book recommendations, and eventually, she decided to start reviewing books in order to share her love of them with everyone. While her favorite genre is fantasy, she reads and reviews many others, from contemporary novels to juvenile picture books. When she isn't reviewing books, you can find her on Twitter @abackwardsstory talking about musicals, nail polish, and Disney, among other things! She continues to review at http://abackwardsstory.blogspot.com if you'd like even more book recommendations!
DRAWN TOGETHER by Minh Lê with illustrations by Dan Santat is gorgeous and breath-taking. It is my favorite picture book of the year with a truly important, resonating message at its heart, and I truly hope it wins multiple ALA (American Library Association) Awards in 2019, including a prestigious Caldecott Award.
Sky One, a British TV Channel, just revealed a teaser channel for its upcoming 2018 TV Series, A Discovery of Witches. The official press release from Sky One states, What happens when a witch and a vampire fall in love? History professor and closet witch Diana Bishop and geneticist and secret vampire Matthew Clairmont find out when they are thrown together in pursuit of the truth behind a strange manuscript found in the University of Oxford's Bodleian Library.
Alexandra Bracken is on fire. The first book in her #1 New York Times Best Selling series The Darkest Minds is hitting theaters August 3rd, she has a new book, THE DARKEST LEGACY, out July 31st, and Deadline just announced that Lionel Wigram (Fantastic Beasts, Harry Potter) will be bringing her middle-grade series The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding to the big screen.
Sacred Lies is based on the award-winning novel THE SACRED LIES OF MINNOW BLY by Stephanie Oakes. The novel has roots in the Brothers Grimm tale The Handless Maiden, which is a darker tale. The book, too, is dark and twisted, about a handless girl named Minnow Bly who grew up in a dangerous cult. It is a murder mystery, as the cult leader is now missing, and Minnow Bly, now in a juvenile detention center, may just know more than she's saying.
This past week, Lionsgate posted the full trailer for their upcoming thriller A SIMPLE FAVOR online, and it has since been popping up on social media and getting a lot of buzz. If you like psychological thrillers like Gone Girl and Girl on the Train, A Simple Favor will be your next obsession. All three movies were based on novels, and the genre is booming. Publishers can't get books into the hands of readers fast enough, and movie rights often sell before the titles even hit stores.
Even if you aren't a big fan of superhero books, you're going to enjoy THE SUPERVILLAIN AND ME. The setting is super contemporary and the book is more about school and family and relationships and life with a side of heroes. (Plus, it's about being cast as the lead in a school musical where everything is going wrong!) It's very palatable if you aren't a fan of the genre. And if you are a fan? It's just as much fun!
The final book in the #1 New York Times Best Selling Series Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas releases this fall, and fans have been speculating on how it all ends...and how the cover looks!
This past week, Netflix revealed the trailer for the US release of the #1 New York Times Best Selling Novel THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
WILLA OF THE WOOD is amazing. Stunning. Beautiful. It is one of the best books I've read in 2018. I wasn't expecting it. I am so, so enamored.
This week, highly anticipated debut novel WE HUNT THE FLAME by Hafsah Faizal debuted its shiny new cover. Faizal is an American Muslim and website + graphic designer with her own online store, IceyDesigns. Her debut novel is a high fantasy set in the world of ancient Arabia, and designing the cover to resemble the Middle East was important to Faizal.
Last year, BroadwayWorld treated readers to a special excerpt of LOST AND FOUND SISTERS, the first book in the new series Wildstone from New York Times Best Selling Author Jill Shalvis. Last night, the first full trailer for upcoming movie The Hate U Give dropped during the BET Awards. Less than 12 hours later, the trailer already has over 1.1 million views on YouTube. Fitting for what is hyped to be one of the most important movies of the year, especially considering the novel has spent the last 68 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List since it debuted last February--and many of those weeks have been spent at #1, where it is residing once more this week. THE HATE U GIVE is Angie Thomas' first novel and has already won or been shortlisted for several awards, including the prestigious National Book Aard Longlist, Michael L. Printz Award, William C. Morris Award, and Coretta Scott King Award. Her sophomore novel, ON THE COME UP, will release in February 2019.
I like books that deal with Hollywood and celebrities, but they so often only deal with the glitzy side of life. AMERICAN GIRLS digs in and looks at the Hollywood's underbelly. Not everyone can be rich and famous, a household name across the country. Many actors are struggling to survive and get by and can barely make the B-List or even the C-List. They'll take any job they can, even if it's embarrassing or shameful. They'll do things they're not proud of. They'll turn into people they hate. AMERICAN GIRLS looks at all this and more, while at the same time twisting in history about Charles Manson and the Manson Girls, as well as the plight of growing up in an uncertain world.
There are some authors I'll read no matter what. Some tropes, too, actually. I love contemporary worlds where the backdrop revolves around singers or actors--and if you're here on BroadwayWorld, then so do you! This time around, we get singers in our novel.
Last week, Helen Hoang's debut novel, THE KISS QUOTIENT, released. The online chatter for this title has been favorable since before its release, with huge word-of-mouth as early readers fell in love with the world and the characters and began raving about the book to get it on the radar of more readers. Last week when I attended the Book Expo of America, the annual book conference for booksellers, librarians, reviewers, etc., I heard the title recommended several times. I recommended it a few times myself, having already read it twice--and it wasn't even published yet!
Today, BroadwayWorld is sitting down with Mary Winn Heider to pepper her with questions regarding her new novel and, of course, the world of theatre! Heider is also an ensemble member with the theater company Barrel of Monkeys, and, of course, we had to ask her about her favorite plays!
