Alyson Eng

Alyson Eng is a General and Cardiac Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. She is a graduate from the sonography program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and a graduate from the University of British Columbia where she has a Bachelor of Science degree in the Biological Sciences. She is also a current Sonography program instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Along with her love for science, the arts have also been a passion for her as she has an Associate Diploma (A.R.C.T.) in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Playing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until November 17th, Broadway Across Canada's WAITRESS officially premiered in Vancouver, B.C. with a brand new National Tour cast on Tuesday. Led by the amazing Bailey McCall as the show's lead: Jenna Hunterson, this touring production did not fail to impress me with its emotion, music, and energy.

Imagine this: you are sitting underneath the beautiful Vancouver sky on a warm summer night. Surrounding you is a warm and inviting venue filled with people of all ages who are beaming with the excitement for the spectacle that is about to take the stage. Looking ahead to the set, you see a small Greek island where a hotel owned by Donna Sheridan stands. Vines envelop the white walls of the hotel that include faded wooden doors at the entrances and exits. You stare at the set in awe as the orchestra starts to play and the musical: MAMMA MIA begins.

The peculiarity of the Wormwood household, the magic of Matilda's powers, and the bone-shaking wrath of Miss Trunchbull was felt by readers and audiences near and far. This month, Arts Club brought Roald Dahl's classic tale to life with its production of MATILDA THE MUSICAL. Playing at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in Vancouver from May 16th to July 14th, Arts Club does not disappoint with this truly remarkable show.

The Royal City Musical Theatre's production of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN performed another round of shows this weekend at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster, B.C. Playing from April 4-20, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN tells the story of film stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont with the rise of 'talking pictures' in Hollywood. Filled with romance, drama, and comedy, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN takes us back in time to experience what the the movie industry was like in the late 1920s.

On Wednesday September 12th, Arts Club's production of the play: THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME had its opening night at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Theatre in Vancouver. This 2015 Tony Award winning play (Best Play) is based on the best-selling novel by Mark Haddon with the stage adaptation by Simon Stephens. Being the first show of their 2018-19 season, Arts Club did not disappoint with this impeccable show featuring an incredibly talented cast and compelling storyline.

What do you get when you combine many talented women with phenomenal voices with inspiring stories and songs from many beloved Broadway musicals? You get a truly amazing show, which is exactly what Fabulist Theatre presented with OUR TIME: AN EMPOWERMENT CABARET. Performed at the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House in Vancouver, I did not know what to expect from this show as it was unlike anything I have attended in the past. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the show and enjoyed every single minute of it. With a very minimalist stage setup in the venue paired with a changing coloured lighting display, the voices and stories of the performers were able to stand out in this compelling production.

LES MISERABLES is the perfect combination of both and is definitely a must-see for all theatre-goers. On July 10th the touring production of LES MISERABLES presented by Broadway Across Canada had its first performance in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and will continue until Sunday July 15th. Highlighting the story of Jean Valjean (Prisoner #24601) in 19th century France, we follow him throughout his life after he is released on parole and strives for a better future. With its action, romance, humor, and drama the touring production of LES MISERABLES is one that appeals to a wide audience leaving each person completely in awe.

With its well-known songs such as 'Honey Honey' and 'Dancing Queen,' the beloved story of Sophie Sheridan, her mother Donna, and Sophie's 3 possible fathers: Sam, Harry, and Bill brought many laughs and warmed the hearts of audience members during Mamma Mia's opening night at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in Vancouver. The hit musical featuring the songs of ABBA will continue its run until August 12th. As many are familiar with the movie adaptation of the musical from 2008 starring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep and are excited for the movie's sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, this stage production of Mamma Mia from the Vancouver Arts Club couldn't have come at a better time.

Straight from the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, many medal-winning figure skaters that competed in Pyeongchang will be teaming up with some Canadian greats to form an extraordinary cast that will perform across Canada in the STARS ON ICE tour. Beginning in 1991, the Canadian tour once featured skating legends Kurt Browning and Brian Orser, and has continued ever since with many beloved people from the figure skating world over the years.

The minute the curtain was raised and a familiar tune of the Four Tops reached my ears, I knew that both the audience and I were going to be dancing in our seats all night. Throughout the evening, the audience was serenaded with many hits such as the sweet sound of The Temptations singing 'My Girl' and the classic song 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours' by the incredible Stevie Wonder. There was not one moment in the show that I did not absolutely adore.
